Join ASML’s Legal & Compliance Department – Be Part of Progress

Introduction to the job

We believe digital transformation holds the key to a better future. Without microchips, there would be no smartphones, internet or modern aviation to connect us. There would be no satellites to better understand our planet, and none of the medical technology that helps to diagnose and treat disease. ASML is a key player in the world that makes that all happen. In fact, there is a big chance ASML is part of the electronic device you’re using right now, because we are a world leading manufacturer of chip-making machines. We provide chipmakers with state-of-the-art hardware, software and services to mass produce patterns on silicon, increasing the value of a chip while making them faster, smaller and at a lower manufacturing cost.

Headquartered in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, we currently employ over 42,000 people worldwide, spread across 60+ offices. ASML’s Legal & Compliance Department is organized in different groups, including the Governance, Legal, Compliance and Regional teams in Asia and the U.S.

We are looking for a legal counsel to strengthen the business partnering team in the Legal group. In this position you will play a vital role in supporting our DUV and EUV business lines (BLs) and related commercial activities. You’ll be a Legal & Compliance Business Partner (LCBP) for various BL stakeholders, providing strategic guidance that drives business objectives while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Role and responsibilities

As an LCBP you will help the business navigate legal and compliance complexities and enable its objectives while minimizing legal exposure. To be successful in this position, you need a deep understanding of the business and the law, as well as strong communication, stakeholder management and problem-solving skills. You will be part of a team of LCBPs and report into the Head of Legal for Business Lines / Product. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting and advising the business on Legal & Compliance topics across the whole content scope of the Legal & Compliance spectrum and the needs of business stakeholders
  • Monitoring, assessing and advising on global laws and regulations impacting ASML’s product portfolio
  • Executing transactional work (e.g., negotiating contracts)
  • Promoting Legal & Compliance awareness amongst business stakeholders, for example by developing tailored training programs
  • Supporting Legal & Compliance operations initiatives, and identifying opportunities for further operational improvements, including developing comprehensive legal guidance resources (such as playbooks) and helping to establish scalable legal guidance processes and frameworks
  • Working closely with other teams in the Legal & Compliance Department globally, including the LCBPs, legal expertise and regional teams, compliance and ethics teams, and collaborating closely with other departments such as Corporate Intellectual Property, HR, and Operations to provide holistic legal support to the business

Education and experience

  • Master’s degree in law
  • 7-9 years of relevant legal experience, ideally in an international business setting in the high tech/semiconductor industry
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance, commercial law, contracting, and risk management
  • Experience in counseling business teams on product/regulatory and commercial matters

Skills

To thrive in this job, you’ll need the following skills:

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and establish rapport with the business and internal stakeholders
  • Pragmatic approach to legal issues, with a focus on enabling the business while maintaining compliance
  • Strategic outlook with the ability to proactively provide legal guidance that aligns with business objectives
  • Calm and decisive, with the ability to work in ambiguous situations and rise to challenges in high-pressure situations
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex legal and business issues into clear problem statements, processes and guidance
  • Team-oriented mindset, building strong networks and effectively engaging and balancing a dynamic stakeholder environment
  • Fluency in English

Other information

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.).
