Internship Opportunity: Develop a Maintainable Materials Database System

About this position

Space missions demand the highest standards of reliability and quality. At TNO’s Space Systems Engineering department, the Product Assurance team ensures that materials and processes meet these standards. In the past, a database of materials was developed using PHP/SQL, but it has become outdated and cannot be maintained within TNO. As an intern, you will take on the challenge of designing and implementing a modern, maintainable software system that generates lists of materials and processes in the required ESA template format. This new system should replace the old one and be robust, user-friendly, and future-proof.

What will be your role?

This internship offers a unique opportunity to combine software development, data processing, and materials knowledge in a space engineering context. You will work closely with experienced engineers and contribute to improving processes that support cutting-edge space missions.
In this internship, you will analyze the existing PHP/SQL-based materials database and identify its limitations. You will then design and develop a new software solution that is maintainable within TNO and capable of generating lists of materials and processes in the ESA template format. Your role involves understanding the requirements of the Product Assurance team, translating them into a practical system, and ensuring that the solution is user-friendly and future-proof. Throughout the assignment, you will collaborate with experienced engineers, gaining insight into space systems engineering and contributing to the improvement of quality assurance processes.

What we expect from you

  • You are an HBO or Master student in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • You have experience with software development and programming.
  • You are familiar with data processing and have basic knowledge of materials.
  • You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • You communicate easily and work well in a team.

What you'll get in return

  • A highly professional, innovative internship environment, within a team of top experts.
  • A suitable internship allowance (615 euro for wo-, hbo- and mbo-students, for a full-time internship).
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • A free membership of Jong TNO, where you can meet other TNO professionals and join several activities, such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.
