Unilever is looking for a Data and Artificial Intelligence Scientist

About Unilever

Unilever is one of the world’s largest Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) businesses, with interests across Personal Care, Homecare, Refreshment, and Foods product categories. We reach 2 billion consumers a day, making products that people love and that make a difference—nutritious foods, household care essentials, indulgent ice creams, refreshing teas, luxurious shampoos, affordable, disease-combating soaps, and many more. We make around 400 much-loved brands, including global names such as Knorr and Dove, as well as local brands like Calvé (the Netherlands) and Suave (the Americas), and products from the Vegetarian Butcher. Our products are sold in more than 190 countries, meaning you’ll find at least one of our products in seven out of ten households on the planet. We want every one of those products to make a positive impact on the lives of the people who buy them.

We want our business to flourish, and we know that our success depends on others flourishing around us. That's why our purpose is to make sustainable living commonplace, and why sustainable, long-term growth is at the heart of our business model.

Background of the Role

In Nutrition and Ice Cream R&D, we are on a mission to simplify and transform the way we work through the effective use of data and emerging digital capabilities. It starts at the foundation to ensure all our core data (specifications, experimental and product info) are of the highest quality across our large and complex global portfolio. At the same time, we are building our data analytics capability to get value from our data and enable fast decision making. We are also working to build the data and reporting systems to help us manage, report, and deliver our business strategy, including our net zero ambition. At the core for this role, we continue to build the usage of data and AI for our innovation agenda, increasingly allowing us to identify new insights, explore unique innovative spaces, and create new products. Novel approaches like Gen-AI and emerging capabilities will increasingly form a key pillar in this agenda.

The digital capability team works in close cooperation with domain experts across Ice Cream and Nutrition R&D, Digital and Data teams, Business Group partners, and our external ecosystem to help deliver this ambitious program. We are now seeking to further strengthen our digital capability by upgrading the data collection and management infrastructure and ways of working within the science and technology team to make it more fit for purpose, and to develop a coordinated digital programme to provide the digital tools for facilitating and speeding up the product development process in Nutrition and Ice Cream, contributing to our net zero ambition.

Main Job Purpose

The main purpose of this role is to support the development and application of emerging digital capabilities to accelerate the usage of data and AI in science and technology development, contributing to the innovation agenda and our net zero ambition for both Nutrition and Ice Cream.

Job Summary

The main responsibility is to define the current capability and next steps to be taken to use data and AI-related tools to accelerate our innovation agenda. Data scientists are working across the different groups within science and technology, and we expect this team to continue to grow in the coming years.

You will work closely with experts in all science and technology groups, capability leads in the teams, as well as a network of data scientists and modelling leads across the Business Group R&D teams. You will build an ecosystem of external partners to further drive this agenda, and also work to strengthen our internal cross-functional network with the digital capability and other functions across Nutrition & Ice Cream Business Groups.

You will be part of a digital team that jointly leads the digital transformation agenda in Nutrition and Ice Cream R&D with a clear data/digital-first mindset and help to build the capability across the organisation to become future fit and deliver the strategy.

  • Strong skills and expertise in data science (database, statistics, machine learning, AI, NLP, etc.)
