The Faculty of Science and Leiden Observatory invite applications for a

Research Technician in the Laboratory for Astrophysics

Project Description

We are looking for a motivated Research Technician to join the Laboratory for Astrophysics (LfA) at Leiden Observatory for a 6-month appointment, as part of the NOVA instrumentation phase 6 project: “Formation of molecular organics in solid-state astrochemistry.”
This project focuses on the development and implementation of new equipment for existing ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems to study the spectroscopy and chemical evolution of interstellar ices. The main goal is to obtain broadband spectroscopic data for key interstellar molecules in pure and mixed forms under astronomically relevant conditions.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Upgrading the existing experimental OASIS setup and providing technical support.
  • Performing systematic measurements of optical constants of molecular ices.
  • Assisting with research documentation and contributing to technical reports.
  • Developing and organizing a database to host the collected spectroscopic data.

You will work closely with the project leader and the LfA team in an international, collaborative research environment.

Selection Criteria

We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate who meets the following requirements:

  • Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in experimental physics, astrochemistry, or a related field.
  • Technical skills: Experience with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems, cryogenic techniques, and programming.
  • Soft skills: Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • Additional assets: Prior experience in laboratory instrumentation or spectroscopy will be an advantage.

Supervision and Collaboration

The position will be based at the Laboratory for Astrophysics within Leiden Observatory and will be supervised by Dr. Ko-Ju Chuang. The successful candidate may be asked to present at NOVA instrumentation-related meetings.

Terms and Conditions

  • Full-time appointment (1.0 FTE) for 6 months (no extension foreseen).
  • The gross salary ranges from €3.546 per month in the first year to €5.538 gross per month based on a full-time position (pay scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
  • Benefits: Attractive package including pension scheme, paid parental leave, holiday allowance (8%), and year-end bonus (8.3%). International candidates may be eligible for the 30% tax ruling.
