Project Overview

Our climate is changing and the effects are already visible on weather patterns. And this will continue in the coming decades. Our projections of air quality are currently based on expected future emissions of air pollutants, with taking into account air quality policies. But apart from this direct impact, climate change also affects the exposure pathways of pollutants (ozone, nitrogen dioxide, small particulates and certain allergens) in the air, with have consequences for public health. These indirect effects of climate change on air quality are not yet taken into account in climate change models. A significant proportion of deaths attributed to hot summers are expected to have been caused by air pollution.

The main objective of the project is to quantify future effects of changes in climate on a high spatial resolution in the Netherlands on the concentrations and exposure of health-related airborne pathways (gases, particles and pollen). The effects of climate change will be put in perspective with the effects of emission projections related to air quality and climate policies. The purpose is to provide policymakers and society with complete information on the impact of policies on health-related concentrations and exposure of gases and particles.

Your Role

You will start with getting acquainted with the models (EMEP, WRF) that are used in the project. And how to use climate scenarios in these models. You will perform model simulations, validate the output with measurements, perform simulations with various climate and air quality scenarios and analyze the concentrations of air pollutants. In the second part of the project you will focus on simulations of pollen and how changes in climate will effect the exposure to pollen in the Netherlands.

You will publish the findings as papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. These papers will form the basis of your PhD thesis.

Details of the PhD

Depending on your background, a master course at Utrecht University might be part of your programme.

As a PhD student, you will also follow one or two mandatory courses for PhD students at Utrecht University and participate in group meetings with fellow PhD students and staff members at the University. You will also be part of the PhD track of the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU) of Utrecht University.

You will be appointed at RIVM in Bilthoven and will defend your PhD at Utrecht University. Your promotor and co-promotor are employed at RIVM and at Utrecht University. You will become part of the department of Research on Airquality and Noise at RIVM.

The PhD project is part of the Strategic Programme RIVM. This is our programme for our own research, innovation and knowledge development. With this programme, we focus on topics that we think deserve extra attention, because they may have an impact on public health and the environment in the future.

Unique to this Position

RIVM focuses on a sustainable, safe and healthy living environment. With your research you contribute to solutions for societal problems. This means that your work creates impact. As a PhD student your output will not only be scientific papers, but you will also directly and indirectly contribute to the air quality policy process in the Netherlands.

You will be part of a department of 30 people, but you will work together with colleagues from other departments as well. In the project, you will work in a team of five RIVM colleagues. Our working atmosphere is open, honest and involved. We are there for each other and look out for each other. Everyone adds their unique value and expertise, and we like to learn from one another. There is plenty of room for your own ideas and initiatives. Hybrid working is very common at RIVM, but for exchange of scientific ideas, which is vital for the research, your are expected to be in the office frequently.

Job Requirements

For this position it is a necessity that you have a strong interest in modelling the atmosphere and that you have the ambition to contribute to scientific progress. Therefore we are looking for an enthusiastic researcher. As you are working in a developing field, you need to be creative at times.

We work in teams and you are in touch with colleagues across different scientific fields, so good communication skills are required. This also entails proficiency in spoken and written English, as the research is done in English. RIVM is a Dutch-speaking organization and many group meetings will be in Dutch, so it is expected that you are able and willing to invest in learning basic Dutch.

Furthermore, we ask:

• A completed Master’s degree in meteorology, environmental sciences, earth sciences or a related discipline and have a strong interest in air quality and climate change;
• Programming skills and knowledge of R or Python are a plus. If you don’t have this knowledge, we can help you on the job to get started with it.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

Bij het RIVM hebben we één van de beste cao's van Nederland, namelijk die van de Rijksoverheid. Naast een goed salaris hebben we aantrekkelijke arbeidsvoorwaarden zoals een Individueel Keuzebudget van 16.5 % van je bruto jaarsalaris waarover je zelf de regie hebt. Je kunt iedere maand een deel laten uitbetalen of extra vrije dagen kopen of verkopen. Daarnaast bieden we fiscale voordelen om bijvoorbeeld je studieschuld af te lossen. Ook zijn we een mantelzorgvriendelijke organisatie.

Overige arbeidsvoorwaarden

Naast het salaris ontvang je een Individueel Keuzebudget (IKB). Het IKB bestaat uit geld (16,50% van je bruto jaarsalaris) en tijd. Met het IKB maak jij de keuzes die bij jou passen en kun je een deel van je arbeidsvoorwaarden zelf samenstellen. Je kunt er bijvoorbeeld voor kiezen om een deel van je maandinkomen te laten uitbetalen wanneer jij dat wenst. Ook kun je dit budget omzetten in verlof en andersom of besteden aan fiscaal vriendelijke doelen. De Rijksoverheid hecht sterk aan persoonlijke groei en loopbaanontwikkeling en biedt daarvoor tal van mogelijkheden. Tot de secundaire arbeidsvoorwaarden behoren onder meer verschillende studiefaciliteiten, bedrijfsfitness, volledige vergoeding van je OV-reiskosten woon-werkverkeer en gedeeltelijk betaald ouderschapsverlof.
