About this position
Air quality, and particulate matter in particular, is a major health concern. However, air quality in Europe is always a complex mixture of anthropogenic emissions and natural sources. Dust as a natural source of air pollutants often affects air quality, visibility and even climate. Therefore, there is a growing interest among EU Member States and air quality policy makers to quantify the natural aerosol contribution to regional air quality. Moreover, within the European air quality regulations there is the possibility to subtract the natural dust contributions from PM exceedances of limit values. This requires the availability of a qualitative and quantitative estimate of the natural dust contributions at observation sites.
What will be your role?
The project aims to develop a computationally efficient tool using observational data in combination with an ensemble numerical model product to quantify the daily and annual dust contribution to air quality in European cities and observation sites. The research phase includes literature review and analysis of model and ground-based air quality station data. This will be followed by development, implementation and validation of a tool together as a team to determine annual average dust impact over Europe and number of natural dust-influenced air quality exceedance days.
