This transdisciplinary PhD position focuses on assessing and identifying the key indicators for shaping just and effective climate resilience while working with local and regional governance stakeholders in five pilot cities across the EU. The work will be a part of the Horizon Europe project Just Climate Resilience through Enhanced Adaptation and Capacity Harnessing (JustREACH).
The objective of JustREACH is to enable these local and regional authorities to overcome capacity limitations with:
JustREACH will co-design and test outputs with five pilot regions that are also consortium practice partners, all of whom are Mission Charter Signatories for climate adaptation. JustREACH partners also represent countries with regions receiving the Cohesion Fund (Greece, Croatia, Hungary) and the Just Transition Fund (Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Greece, France, Ireland, the Netherlands). The project consists of an experienced interdisciplinary consortium who are topic experts in their field related to adaptation and regional development from the fields of economics, sociology, urban studies, policy analysis and design, computational sciences, geography, simulation modeling, and critical sustainability studies.
The primary focus of this transdisciplinary 4-year PhD position in the context of the project will include, but not limited to, the following tasks:
While working on their own research, the PhD candidate will be joining the general assembly meetings taking place every 6 months and will be working complementarily with another PhD based at TUD working on the same project (focused on agent-based modeling).

The Faculty of TPM provides an important contribution to solving complex technical-social issues, such as energy transition, mobility, digitalisation, water management and (cyber) security. TPM does this with its excellent education and research at the intersection of technology, society and policy. We combine insights from both engineering and social sciences as well as the humanities. TPM develops robust models and designs, is internationally oriented and has an extensive network of knowledge institutions, companies, social organisations and governments.
Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5-year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from €2901 per month in the first year to €3707 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate, you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.
