Senior Legal Counsel, Commercial

We’re looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our commercial legal team in Schiphol, Rijk Netherlands

You will provide first class general and specialist business and legal support as part of the Commercial Legal team on all aspects of its general commercial and technology contract work including working closely as a key business partner to Liberty Global Procurement, Liberty Tech and the Liberty Global Partner Market Service teams. The role will have a particular focus on networks and IT plus other technology related legal projects and contracts. Also international partner markets and high growth ventures of the Liberty Global Group (the “Group”).

You will play a meaningful role in the delivery of key initiatives across a broad range of matters.

Key Accountabilities

Liberty Global has steadily grown in complexity and scope with the launch of many new products and services across the Group requiring ever increasing support from the legal team to advise on, draft and negotiate contracts in line with such support. The Senior Legal Counsel role will work alongside other lawyers to ensure that such support is provided on a timely and efficient basis.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing, drafting and finalising contractual documentation (including global framework agreements, statements of work and purchase agreements);
  • Working in support of our Liberty Blume Procurement Solutions team to provide legal advice and guidance on procurement activities for the Group;
  • Working in support of our Liberty Tech team to provide legal advice and guidance on technology projects for the Group;
  • Working in support of our Liberty Global Partner Market Service team to provide legal advice and guidance on partner market matters;
  • Working in collaboration with Liberty Global’s Legal M&A team to provide commercial legal support in connection with M&A transactions of the Group (including in relation to procurement and transitional services);
  • Project manage legal aspects of commercial transactions to ensure execution within the required timescales and budget;
  • Provide legal assistance in resolving disputes and conflicts, and to co-ordinate the involvement of external lawyers in the event of legal proceedings being taken;
  • To keep abreast at all times of relevant legal developments, and also developments in the business arena and across units, so as to be able to maximize the quality of support provided to the management of those units;
  • Contribute to the improvement in quality of legal services across the Group, by (e.g.) providing information, leadership, defining policies and training the business on legal developments and key legal issues; and
  • Play an active role in the Commercial Legal team, contributing to legal team meetings, leading projects related to best practice & know how, new processes, development, team offsites and so on to ensure the Commercial Legal team remains a cohesive, fun and rewarding environment to work in.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Qualified lawyer with experience gained in private practice and preferably in house as well
  • Experience of the technology and/or telecoms sector would be desirable.
  • Knowledge of commercial law (including IT, IP, AI, outsourcing and data privacy law).
  • Experience in reviewing and drafting standard legal documentation (framework agreements, statements of work and purchase agreements, etc.).
  • Excellent academics.
  • Holder of at least one legal degree or post-graduate legal qualification.
  • Strong communication and project management skills.
  • Team player and capable of working with different cultures.
  • Writing and drafting skills, for expressing matters, contracts, reports, etc., in legal terms accurately, pragmatically and inventively.
  • Word and Powerpoint expertise.
  • Strong ethics and strength of conviction.
  • Ability to manage upwards, keeping lawyers in the team informed about important issues, able to present clearly and precisely to stakeholders, enabling others to understand the key facts and issues.
  • Ability to seek feedback from the business, external partners or clients to ensure quality of service and work output is maintained to the highest standards.
  • Keen to share knowledge with the legal department as a whole, taking an active role in departmental educational opportunities, periodic departmental meetings and other initiatives.
  • Strong commercial acumen.
  • Be dynamic and proficient in handling multiple material matters at any one time.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Ability to work across multiple jurisdictions and with internal and external clients / counsel.
