As Sub Project Lead - HVDC Primary Systems for our 2GW HVDC projects, your expertise will focus on successfully managing and supervising all site activities for the primary installations during the construction phase in compliance with requirements and contract, with an eye for time, quality, cost, and safety.

Your Profile and Background

  • Strong technical expertise in high-voltage systems, supported by a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and extensive hands-on experience with HV installations and components such as transformers, GIS/AIS, converter valves, and harmonic filters.
  • Skilled in managing engineering and commissioning activities, including participation in design reviews, FATs, inspections, and overseeing mechanical completion and (pre)commissioning processes on-site in line with industry standards and project specifications.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in Dutch and English, enabling effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and stakeholders in complex project environments.
  • Structured and independent work approach, with strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a proactive mindset in handling technical decisions, deviation reports, and lessons learned.
  • Flexible and mobile team player, able to work both onshore and offshore under DGMM regulations, with a high degree of assertiveness, self-initiative, and responsibility. Work first year in Arnhem, willingness to relocate for a few years on site in yard, Malaysia, Johor Bahru, then offshore and onshore at landstations.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiar with documentation review, technical reporting, and the preparation of handover and commissioning packages.

Your Contribution to TenneT

The Sub Project Lead - HVDC Primary Systems is managing the site activities for Primary installations during the construction phase of a 2GW platform and/or 2GW landstation. You ensure that the quality (including documentation, equipment, process robustness, etc.) meets all requirements (including contract, technical standard, and best practice). You're also responsible for ensuring decision-making with respect to technical questions and providing all relevant information required by the project management team.

The Sub Project Lead may be supported by a team of inspectors competent in your discipline. This role will be located in Arnhem for the first year, then you will go to the construction site/shipyard in Malaysia, Johor Bahru. You also will be working in one of the 2GW landstation sites in the Netherlands (Borssele, Geertruidenberg, or Eemshaven) and offshore during HVDC construction works.

You will report hierarchically/operationally to the Lead Site and functionally to the Lead Stations (or Project Lead HVDC).

  • Participate in design reviews and witness FATs during the engineering and manufacturing phases, ensuring compliance with technical specifications and supporting TenneT’s quality management team in inspections at production facilities.
  • Monitor on-site installation and mechanical completion activities of the HVDC contractor, ensuring work is performed according to approved method statements, installation drawings, and relevant ITPs and ITRs.
  • Oversee and witness site (pre)commissioning activities, reviewing ITPs, verifying proper documentation of test results, and ensuring adherence to commissioning procedures and standards.
  • Ensure SHE compliance and quality control, actively monitoring contractor performance, addressing deviations, and preparing decision proposals for technical queries and non-performance issues.
  • Coordinate the technical handover process, including the preparation of documentation, evaluation of system readiness, and collection of lessons learned to support continuous improvement.
  • Maintain technical oversight of HVDC system components, including transformers, converter reactors, harmonic filters, GIS/AIS, converter valves, instrument transformers, bushings, and terminations.

This Will Be Our Challenge

Large Projects Offshore is a key contributor to the energy transition. The Unit is responsible for the current and future development of the offshore grid as a whole and subsequently for the development and realization of the DC interconnectors and the Offshore Wind Farm grid connections in both the German and Dutch sectors of the North Sea.
