Operations Manager Law

The practice of Loyens & Loeff is divided into two clusters: the Cluster Law and the Cluster Tax. Within these clusters, specialised expertise groups focus on developing and sharing knowledge in their respective fields. The Cluster Law comprises six Expertise Groups:

  • Corporate / M&A
  • Immovable Property
  • Banking & Finance
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Funds
  • Employment

The Operations Manager (Law) is a newly established position at Loyens & Loeff, designed to support both strategic initiatives as well as operations of the aforementioned Expertise Groups. Such groups are led by a Cluster Chair (Law), who is a Partner of the firm.

The Operations Manager (Law) oversees the operations of the Cluster Law. This role is pivotal, encompassing strategic responsibilities and driving initiatives aimed at optimizing effectiveness. Additionally, the Operation Manager coordinates operational processes like budgeting, employee management, and appraisals across the firm’s Home Markets (currently the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland).

This role can be performed from any of Loyens & Loeff’s Home Markets, though frequent presence in the Amsterdam office (approximately 2-3 days per week) is expected, as well as regular visits to the other Home Markets.

Your responsibilities as Operations Manager (Law):

As Operations Manager you are responsible for (i) providing accurate steering information for the Cluster Chair, both independently and in cooperation with Business Functions such as Finance & Control and Human Resources, (ii) playing a role (as driver or contributor) in key strategic initiatives related to effectiveness of the (Expertise Groups in the) Cluster, (iii) coordinating key operational processes, (iv) providing functional steering (where required) to the Group Coordinators in the different Expertise Groups, and (v) managing (hierarchically) the Group Coordinators and Team Assistant Coordinator for the Cluster.

Within the organisation, you are regarded as a trusted strategic advisor for our Partners. Additionally, the role is seen as a key counterpart for Business Function Heads and Directors. You will closely cooperate with and are assisted by (i) the Group Coordinators, who provide tailored support for specific Expertise Groups, and (ii) the Team Assistant Coordinator, who manages Team Assistants in the Netherlands.

Your key responsibilities comprise of:

  • Leading a team of approximately 10 direct reports across the firm’s Home Markets (the Group Coordinators and Team Assistant Coordinator);
  • Refining the strategy of the Cluster, in collaboration with the Cluster Chair, who leads the strategic framework as followed by the Executive Committee;
  • Sharpening the policy of the Cluster Law with the Cluster Chair
  • Monitoring reporting on utilisation and leverage ratios, with reports prepared by Finance & Control;
  • Ensuring consistent operating standards and procedures for the Cluster Law across all Home Markets;
  • Preparing the initial submission of Partner candidates to the Executive Committee;
  • Acting as the main contact for Finance & Control and Human Resources issues that cannot be resolved by the Expertise Group;
  • Collaborating with the Operations Manager of the Cluster Tax on various topics, including policies alignment of the Clusters, and Partner collaboration of the Clusters;
  • Approving hiring decisions, expenses and financial arrangements with clients within specified limits;
  • Preparing the budget for the Cluster Law and aligning on this with the Cluster Chair, other Executive Committee members, and Finance & Control;
  • Proactively identifying improvement opportunities for the effectiveness of the Cluster Law;
  • Assisting in establishing an effective Legal Knowledge Center with various stakeholders and ensuring that they understand the service needs of the Cluster.

This vacancy suits you, because you are/have:

Experience

  • Proven experience (indicatively 10+ years) in a leadership or management role;
  • Higher professional or university education
  • Fluency in English is required, proficiency in Dutch and / or French is an advantage;
  • Significant experience with working in a global, multi-country context (preferred);
  • Experience in professional services firms (preferred);

Specific skills and/or key competencies

  • Proven success in leading and managing teams;
  • Ability to mentor and lead diverse teams across different countries, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment;
