Assistant or Associate Professor Change Management in Healthcare

Job Description

Health and care systems face multiple challenges now and in the future, given the demographical changes, capacity shortages but also the increased use of technology in care delivery. Introducing new technologies may have unintended consequences in increased or new safety/security risks. Knowledge from the technological domain and the impact of the sociotechnical context will thus be of increasing importance to effectively implement such new technologies in healthcare. This requires not only technical implementation which is a success if the technology is ready to be used, but also considering the social and organizational implementation. Change management is thus crucial to prepare and support leaders, teams and individuals in making organizational and systems changes to accompany the introduction of technology.

The section Safety and Security Science (3S) has a vacancy for an assistant/associate professor to further develop and improve methods and interventions for change management in healthcare, with the overall aim to contribute to insights on how to safely implement new (technological) innovations in healthcare or deal with capacity shortages. These methods should include the human- and organisational factors which influence the safety- and security levels of technologies or tools used, as well as strategies to reduce risk levels with safe-by-design principles. The idea is that you will spend a significant amount of your time conducting empirical research collecting data on the safety and security of new innovations or interventions, i.e. barriers and facilitating factors, designing and evaluating change management strategies and understanding why and how these strategies achieve their effect to contribute to theories in the field.

You will work in a dedicated, interdisciplinary team of engineers, cognitive psychologists, human factors specialists and medical professionals within the 3S section and the Centre for Safety in Healthcare. You will develop your own research line and contribute to shared research projects in the team from your own field of expertise. Furthermore, you can collaborate with economists and philosophers of the VTI department on possible economic and ethical aspects of your research line, and with other technical universities participating in the Sector plan. You will participate in education to both Bachelor (Safety in Healthcare in the study program Clinical Technology) and Master students (Health track of Complex System Engineering & Management).

We are looking for ambitious academic scholars that are expected to:

  • Perform and publish research in high quality academic journals with a research focus on change management in health systems.
  • Contribute to a multidisciplinary team in the field of safety and security science, working in healthcare and other industries.
  • Acquire externally funded research projects.
  • Teach relevant Master and Bachelor courses, particularly on health and care systems and safety in healthcare.
  • Supervise BSc-, MSc- and PhD students.
  • Perform management tasks in the section 3S and other parts of the organization.

Job Requirement

  • You have a PhD in human factors engineering or engineering design, health sciences, social sciences, medicine or similar background, with shown affinity to the healthcare domain.
  • You are an inspired academic with the social skills needed to cooperate with many parties and other disciplines.
  • You have a track record with relevant academic publications.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Relevant teaching experience, preferably a completed University Teaching Qualification.
  • Experience in coordinating educational activities is a pre.
  • Excellent skills of the Dutch and English language (oral and written), where it is expected that the candidate can function in the Dutch speaking healthcare context and bachelor programs within the first year (minimum level B2).
  • You are also the point of contact for the hospitals and healthcare professionals who are indispensable for your research in this interesting field.
