Marketing & Business Development Manager - LatAm & Europe

About the Role

With almost 320 partners and close to 1500 fee earners in total, Europe is the largest region within DLA Piper International. Led by the Head of Marketing & Business Development (MBD) Europe, the European MBD team consists of the local MBD teams in 14 countries across Continental Europe and CEE.

Our European platform includes the Iberian region, with 150 lawyers and staff in our Madrid and Lisbon offices, contributing to our broader Latin America (LatAm) efforts. The LatAm group is a joint initiative involving partners from DLA Piper International, LatAm, and the US, leveraging the Iberian platform to enhance awareness of our LatAm, European, and US offerings and support cross-selling activities.

The European MBD team underpins the region’s success through high profile campaigns, events and client development activity, aligning local market demands and opportunities in Europe and Iberia with the International LatAm, practice groups, sector groups, ESG and Law& strategies, in a fast paced environment. This team is part of the larger international MBD team, which spans Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific.

This role is dual-focused, with an expected 50/50 time split between supporting the LatAm marketing strategy and broader European initiatives. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with LatAm partners, the International and European MBD community, as well as the Head of MBD Europe on a range of key initiatives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with partners leading on International LatAm strategy, the MBD community, local MBD teams across Europe, and the Head of MBD Europe to plan and execute marketing and business development activities, encompassing the full marketing mix.

LatAm Focus:

  • Support fee earners in bringing our LatAm offering to market and identifying opportunities for cross-border activities
  • Work closely with senior leadership across sectors and regions to promote the LatAm Group internally, enhancing connectivity and knowledge sharing across our global network
  • Interact with the Senior Director Global Initiatives in the US, the Senior Marketing Manager LatAm in Europe, Country MBD Managers in International, and Country MBD Managers in LatAm.
  • Coordinate and organize the LatAm BD actions and events, including our flagship events Latin America Panorama and LatAm Week
  • Help coordinate the LatAm Champions Board and keep track of the travels, meetings, referrals, fees generated and success stories

Wider Europe Focus:

  • Support European MBD teams and partners/fee earners on local roll-out of global thought leadership pieces and innovative products/tools, localizing associated campaigns and marketing materials to European markets
  • Support local teams on select projects and priorities in their jurisdiction, helping to bridge capacity needs and/or adding expert knowledge
  • Leverage the power of our internal systems and utilise data analytics, to provide a smarter marketing & BD processes, service and experience to the European teams
  • Work closely with Head of MBD Europe and local teams to identify areas for improvement; collaborate with local teams, International counterparts, GSC and other service areas to improve those processes.

In order to deliver the areas of key responsibility identified above, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Plan, manage and execute LatAm and local MBD projects and activities in various European markets and team constellations
  • Coordinate key actions and ensure implementation of actions for select European projects
  • Ensure effective, transparent communication in a International matrix organisation
  • Manage and report on project delivery against plans, budgets and objectives
  • Contribute information and ideas to European and LatAm MBD strategy
  • Use information on marketing systems to make strategic decisions and identify requirements
  • Champion the collaboration between our local and international teams in line with our values
  • Embrace change and influence others to modify their behaviours and attitudes where necessary
  • Build relationships with other local functions and disciplines within DLA Piper in Europe and LatAm
  • Be involved in activity which promotes the overall well-being and/or standing of the business; evaluate ethical codes to ensure marketing activities are compliant

About You

The successful candidate must have:

  • A strong understanding of the LatAm region and local European market needs and expectations, along with a deep knowledge of DLA Piper’s international strategy, and the ability to align these effectively
  • Fluent English and Spanish language skills, preferably with additional Portuguese language skills
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills. In addition you will be expected to have strong probing, consultative listening skills coupled with the ability to negotiate and persuade senior legal and client personnel
  • A deep knowledge of marketing & BD processes for professional services and profound understanding of the full marketing and business development mix
  • The ability to display a consistently positive and proactive attitude and demonstrate a collaborative working style and intercultural understanding; operating both as an individual and as a team member across different team sizes
  • An exemplary professional approach and demonstrably high levels of commitment and internal client care
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Demonstrable experience in demanding, partner-led international environments, where success has depended on an ability to:
    • multi-task and work to deadlines
    • manage conflicting priorities and expectations in a robust and fast-paced atmosphere
    • perform at a consistently high standard
    • remain calm and composed in what are often demanding situations
    • see delegated tasks through to completion at a high standard
  • A proven ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information
  • High level of literacy in IT and marketing systems - Excel, Word, Powerpoint, MS Teams and Outlook are essential; experience of InterAction / CRM and design software would be beneficial
  • Sales techniques, team leading and coaching skills
  • Ability to understand and identify with the firm, its objectives and values
