As a senior leader within the team, and the overall PBWM business, the role holder will take end-to-end responsibility for substantial deliveries and areas of activity across the team’s primary pillars of work, spanning the breadth of strategy, planning and performance, as well as stakeholder relations. They will be a strategic partner to PBWM ExCo and senior stakeholders across the business, Barclays Group and 3rd parties, driving consistently excellent outcomes and helping PBWM achieve its overall strategic ambitions. They will play a key role in the broader management of the team, the successful execution of objectives and activity by more-junior members, and in developing and maintaining a high-performance culture.

Key Accountabilities

The role holder will be responsible for activity across multiple or discreet/focused areas of the team’s primary pillars, as directed by business demand, skillset and capability, and personal and team development.

Vision and Strategy

  • Market Insights: lead the development of market insights for sharing and discussion with the PBWM CEO and ExCo. These should inject an outside-in perspective on how macro drivers in the external environment are shaping the industry, markets and client behaviours.
  • Competitor Landscape: develop a deep understanding of how competitors are responding to these environmental changes, drive the benchmarking of Barclays’ relative strengths and weaknesses and source analysis of peer performance from market updates and results cycles.
  • Vision and Strategy: determine PBWM’s vision, narrative and role to play, identifying opportunity to compete and grow, as well as future market and competitive positioning. Take ownership for setting out the strategic actions required to transform from current to target state.

Planning and Performance

  • Forward Planning: develop a forward plan of Operational Priorities for the PBWM business that drive delivery of the business strategy and presented at varying degrees of detail with suitable strategic narrative up to Group ExCo level. These priorities should include the allocation of Strategic Investment (SI), phasing of delivery milestones and incremental hiring.
  • In-Flight Transformation: ensure accurate and timely delivery tracking of in-flight transformation programmes and associated Operational Priorities. Measure the degree to which desired outcomes are being achieved and step-in proactively to drive remedial management action and escalation.
  • Delivery Governance and Dependencies: own the execution of associated delivery governance, including PBWM’s NAPA pipeline, Group Transformation Office reporting, Monthly Business Review (MBR) submissions and engagement with Group delivery partners (e.g. BUK), maintaining trusted senior relationships across these stakeholder areas.

Shaping and Design

  • Problem Statement: proactively lean into critical Operational Priorities, where additional support is required, partnering with the respective PBWM ExCo AEs to define a clear set of objectives, constraints and scope. Disaggregate and structure the problem statement, before developing hypotheses and an initiative work plan.
  • Solution Options and Recommendation: bring an outside-in perspective, technical expertise and understanding to identify Barclays’ leverage points and potential solution options, evaluating associated delivery feasibility and anticipated commercials. Determine and articulate a persuasive overall recommendation based on the assessment of relative pros and cons.
  • Business Case and Plan: set out high-level business requirements for the proposed solution, establishing an over-arching blueprint for downstream delivery teams. Prescribe immediate next steps and action plan, accompanied by a business case for integration into the PBWM MTP.

Purpose of the role

To analyse and assess market trends, competitor landscape, and potential risks and opportunities to inform strategic decision-making.

Accountabilities

  • Development and presentation of compelling strategic recommendations to senior management, addressing key business challenges and opportunities.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of implemented strategies, recommending adjustments as needed.
  • Communication of complex strategic information clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders.
  • Identification and assessment of potential risks associated with the bank's strategic plans and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Conducting in-depth research and analysis of internal and external data, including market trends, competitor analysis, and economic forecasts.

Director Expectations

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide.
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions.
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
