Junior Lecturer in Mathematics

This vacancy is for two Junior Lecturer positions (4 years) in (applied) mathematics at the Department of Mathematics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Your function

As a Junior Lecturer, you will play a central role in higher education within the mathematics department. Your tasks will include: lecturing, supervising internships, working with students to improve their academic skills, initiating and participating in innovation projects related to educational improvement, and coordination and organizational tasks (10%) related to the educational programs.

The mathematics department hosts state-of-the-art bachelor and master programs in Mathematics and Business Analytics, and contributes to many other programmes at the university. The precise tasks will be determined in consultation, taking into account your background and interests as well as the needs of the department.

As a Junior Lecturer you will be encouraged to work on academic innovations and to build a portfolio as preparation for various career paths. To this end, you will have the opportunity to acquire a basic qualification in teaching at university level (‘BKO’) and to follow relevant teaching modules provided by our Center for Teaching and Learning. The junior lecturer position is ideally suited for early-career teachers. You will be working in close cooperation and with the support of enthusiastic and experienced colleagues. A full junior lecturer trajectory is 4 years and 2 months and cannot be extended beyond this period. This position therefore does not lead to permanent employment.

We aim to appoint an inspiring teacher, keen to disseminate mathematics at all levels, to classes with various backgrounds. The Junior Lecturer should be motivated by a strong desire to have an impact on students' learning, and on our educational policies. We expect the Junior Lecturer to contribute to our inclusive, welcoming, international environment.

The preferred starting date is 1 July 2026.

Your profile

• a (prospective) MSc. degree in Mathematics (or an equivalent thereof) with excellent results
• some experience in teaching (e.g. as a TA)
• a desire to develop your teaching skills
• strong communication skills in English

The Department of Mathematics strives for excellence in research. The department balances pure mathematical research with mathematical research motivated by applications. Researchers in the department are on one hand active at a fundamental and theoretical level, and, on the other hand, work on applications with links to business, the sciences, and societal issues. The department has a strong international research staff with expertise in dynamical systems, topology, geometry and algebra, as well as in stochastics (statistics, data analytics, probability).
