Want to make your mark on our time? Become a project manager at TNO in Utrecht!

About this position

As project manager at the Particle Expertise Centre (PEC), you will work within TNO at the Environmental Modelling Sensing and Analysis (EMSA) department. The (inter)national PEC is dedicated to developing practical mitigation strategies through the comprehensive characterisation of particles from both air and industrial processes. With a team of around 60 researchers, consultants, technicians, and project managers, we are committed to ensuring that promising (measurement) innovations in air quality (particulate matter, greenhouse gases, nitrogen, microplastics) succeed in the wider world. We deploy these innovations to provide policymakers and industry with tools for a (regional) targeted approach, which has a positive impact not only on air quality but also on biodiversity and health.

What will be your role?

Together with the team, you will tackle issues such as: particles in the environment—where do they come from? How are they formed? What are they made of? What is the actual quantity? What is the impact of their composition on humans and the environment? And how can we minimise this impact? To answer such questions, it is essential to combine various disciplines. This includes, among other things, specialised fieldwork for on-site measurements, knowledge of diverse analytical techniques, and expertise in applying models for, for example, source determination, dispersion, and exposure. In addition, it is important to interpret and clarify results accurately.

A wide range of stakeholders is usually involved: residents, businesses, the municipality, the province, the European Union, etc. These are major and complex social issues for which TNO seeks solutions in project and consortium formats. You will lead these projects, communicate with stakeholders about them, and coordinate the various interests and expectations. You want to understand the content, but project management is your core business. You facilitate and lead your project team and the ambitions of team members—passionate scientists and technicians who sometimes want more than is realistically or contractually possible. You bring projects to a successful conclusion, ensure that we achieve impact, and keep an eye on what comes next: the continuation of the research line and a steady flow of assignments.

What we expect from you

Calmness, a helicopter view, facilitative skills, and strong communication. In addition, flexibility and the ability to switch quickly are crucial. For example, whether a planned measurement campaign can start is often dependent on weather conditions. This requires, in addition to a plan A, always a plan B (and sometimes a plan C). Of course, you do not do this alone, but in collaboration with the project team and the client(s): you are a team player. You manage the expectations of both internal and external stakeholders well, even when there is resistance. You stand firm.

What else do you bring?

  • You have a higher professional or university degree, preferably with a background in chemistry or environmental science.
  • You have at least seven years’ experience in leading and managing projects.
  • You have a strong affinity with environmental, climate, and circular economy issues.
  • You have good verbal and written skills in both Dutch and English.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 6.000,- and € 7.500,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel or a leased car.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 of 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • Access to TNO’s project managers guild: a network of some three hundred equals. The guild organizes workshops, conferences, intervision sessions and other activities for project managers.
  • A good pension scheme.
