Working at Philips MRI offers the chance to be part of cutting-edge innovation in healthcare technology, specifically in the dynamic field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. You will be part of the R&D MRI division located in Best, the Netherlands. Within this division, the Device Control Layer (DCL) group is responsible for developing real-time software that interacts with the hardware of our MRI systems.

Your role:

As part of your assignment, you will investigate the feasibility and implications of migrating existing real-time software to a Linux-based real-time operating system (VxWorks to Wind River Linux).

  • Assess the feasibility of migrating existing real-time software from VxWorks to Wind River Linux
  • Analyze system-level implications of the transition to a Linux-based real-time operating system
  • Port a custom PCIe-based networking interface device driver to the Linux environment
  • Ensure compatibility with Linux kernel modules and driver architecture
  • Evaluate performance under real-time constraints
  • Validate the functional correctness of the ported software
  • Test real-time behavior to ensure deterministic performance
  • Confirm that the Linux-based system meets the operational requirements of the original real-time application

You're the right fit if:

  • Are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Embedded Systems, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ for low-level systems and driver development
  • Experience with Linux kernel development and device driver architecture
  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), especially VxWorks and Wind River Linux
  • Knowledge of CPU scheduling, memory management, and interrupt handling in real-time systems
  • Competence in debugging tools (e.g., GDB, strace, perf) and performance profiling
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written); Dutch is a plus.
  • Communicate clearly and work well in a team.
  • Show initiative and a willingness to learn.
  • Pay close attention to detail and follow through on tasks.
  • Understanding of computer networking protocols.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Understanding of PCIe interface protocols and hardware-software integration

How we work together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week.

In return, we offer you

A non-stop growth opportunity within a global multinational company. In addition, we also want to remunerate you well for the opportunity. This includes:

  • Monthly full-time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on your education level and if you need to relocate to The Netherlands. Part-time internships receive the allowance pro-rata.
  • Housing compensation. Should you need to relocate to near our office, we’ll offer you a monthly allowance of €300 net if location is in the vicinity of Amsterdam, €255 net for all other Philips locations. To be eligible, we’ll just ask for the rental contract from your landlord, and your usual home-work travel distance needs to be more than 50 km or 1.5 hours of travel time (for a one way trip).
  • Travel compensation, if you are not eligible for a free public transport card; you will receive max. €192 net as a monthly allowance.
  • Paid holidays per internship term.
