Lead the Data Department at Flow Traders

Flow Traders is looking for a Data Engineering Manager to lead the data department in our Amsterdam office and partner with other technology teams like quantitative research, trading, risk, finance and compliance to align data priorities with business goals.

In this role you will define and maintain roadmaps for Data Platform, Core Data, and BI aligned to our company’s priorities and translate our objectives into milestones, as well as champion platform and data product thinking (clear interfaces, documented contracts and self-serving capabilities that increase adoption and reduce operational load).

You will manage project priorities, dependencies and risks ensuring a timely, high-quality delivery of software, datasets and reports and you will establish operational rituals like quarterly / iterative planning, change management, release practices and delivery reviews. Overall, you will drive operational excellence when it comes to incident response, blameless postmortems, runbooks and continuous improvement.

What you will do:

People management and team success:

  • Own career development, coaching, growth plans, performance reviews, and promotions
  • Build and scale the team: hiring, headcount planning, on-boarding, resource allocation, and vendor management
  • Foster a culture of innovation, ownership, and continuous learning
  • Run effective team practices: 1:1s, team meetings, feedback cycles, and team-buildings

Domain accountability across the data organization:

  • Data Platform: evolve a scalable, self-serve platform (batch and streaming) with strong non-functional posture, storage/compute capacity planning, performance, reliability, security, disaster recovery, and cost efficiency
  • Core Data (foundational datasets): lead teams building and maintaining critical datasets (market/reference data, orders/executions, risk), with robust modeling, schema evolution, idempotent processing, and reproducibility for both batch and streaming
  • Business Intelligence: deliver trustworthy KPIs, semantic models/metrics layers, dashboards, and scalable self-serve analytics; standardize definitions and reduce time-to-insight for stakeholders in trading, risk, finance, and compliance
  • Tight SLAs and critical data: set and meet SLAs for intraday and end-of-day pipelines (e.g., market data ingestion, intraday PNL, end-of-day risk, T+1 reconciliations, regulatory/reg-reporting deadlines)
  • Data governance: partner with Security, Legal, and Compliance on cataloging/lineage, RBAC/ABAC, encryption/KMS, retention/recordkeeping, audit trails, and data quality SLAs while ensuring appropriate handling of sensitive trading data

What you need to succeed:

  • 3+ years of engineering management leading data/platform and/or analytics engineering teams
  • 8+ years total in data/platform/analytics engineering
  • Demonstrated success growing data engineers’ careers, improving team health, and leading multi-squad delivery
  • Tooling familiarity across at least one modern data engineering stack
  • Proven track record delivering against roadmaps and tight SLAs for mission-critical data, including on-call and incident management
  • Experience scaling a data platform offering; strong grasp of non-functional requirements (storage/compute architecture, performance, reliability, security, and cost)
  • Familiarity with data governance practices (catalog/lineage, access controls, retention/auditability, data quality frameworks)
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills; comfortable working with trading, research, risk, finance, and compliance
  • Technical skills that are preferred for the role: Google Cloud Platform (GCP): Big Query, Pub/Sub, Dataflow, Dataproc, Cloud Composer, GKE, Cloud Storage, IAM/VPC; cost management and workload isolation on GCP
  • Familiarity with at least one management reporting tool like Power BI, Tableau
  • Trading industry experience: market data ingestion, quantitative research workflows (e.g. model training, back testing), order/execution and risk data, PNL, familiarity with regulatory reporting

Flow Traders, named “ETF Market Marker Europe" by the Annual Global ETF Awards for the last eight consecutive years is an international leading trading house. Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Amsterdam with offices in New York and Singapore, Flow Traders trades equities as well as derivatives, currencies and bonds on exchanges around the world.

Flow Traders is a privately held financial firm that keeps pace with global markets. Our business expands each day by adding new products across an ever-broadening range of markets around the globe.

Flow Traders stays ahead of the competition by focusing on technology and niche competencies in markets where every second counts. This requires access to the best information and the ability to respond instantly. To achieve this, Flow develops its own software in-house. Our team of software developers works in partnership with experienced traders to identify and execute tomorrow's strategies, making Flow a daily pioneer in professional trading.

Team effort
In order to maximize our performance and facilitate our international growth, Flow Traders heavily invest in our employees. The backbone of our success is the collection of creative doers, thinkers, and above all, believers who form our company. We at Flow believe in the team effort and value our people.

The Junior Trader Position
As a trader with Flow you manage and optimize our daily position (pricing and trading) in a wide range of financial products, including equities, bonds, derivatives and complex structured products. You formulate innovative trading strategies and – in close collaboration with our software engineers – develop trading models and tools that you will implement on the trading desk.

Training & Development
Because of the specific nature of the work-environment, we do not expect you to plunge headfirst into your new job. Instead, you will start by following in a three months intensive in-house training program that covers all the intricate details of the trading processes. As a member of an informal team, you will then gradually take on more responsibilities, start monitoring markets and only then start making split-second portfolio adjustments that are at the heart of our success. From trading to devising tactics, and from contributing to new tools to implementing actual programs: you help shape our trading strategy.

What we offer
Flow Traders offers you an exciting job and lots of opportunities within the most dynamic of environments with an excellent compensation package. We provide our employees with the best working environment, the latest technology and continuous support.
