MSc Thesis Topic: Long-Term Morphology Modelling in Wave-Dominated Coastal Systems

Accurate prediction of coastal morphological evolution over medium to long timescales (months to decades) is increasingly critical for climate-resilient coastal planning. Traditional models such as Delft3D and XBeach offer valuable insights but face limitations:

  • Delft3D effectively simulates hydrodynamics and wave stirring but lacks representation of wave-driven currents essential for sediment transport in wave-dominated systems.
  • XBeach, originally designed for storm impact modelling, tends to overestimate erosion during calm conditions due to limited onshore transport.

Recent projects emphasize the need for reduced-complexity models and hybrid approaches that balance computational efficiency with physical realism. This thesis will contribute to this evolving field by enhancing models (e.g. XBeach) applicability for long-term morphodynamic simulations.

What you will do as a graduate intern

This graduation research is focused on medium to long-term (months to decades) morphological modelling in wave-dominated coastal systems. Potential research objectives are (to be discussed with the student):

  • Evaluate the performance of current XBeach configurations for long-term sediment transport.
  • Implement and test improved sediment transport formulations within XBeach based on prior work.
  • Compare modelling approaches using real-world case studies.
  • Validate model outputs using multi-temporal bathymetric datasets.
  • Assess feasibility of integrating improved formulations into operational workflows.

Where will you work?

At Haskoning, you will join an independent, employee-owned international consultancy that combines engineering, design, and consultancy services with software and technology. Our mission, "Enhancing Society Together," drives us to create a positive impact on the world.

We offer purpose-driven and challenging work in diverse international projects, leveraging our 140+ years of expertise. With over 6,800 employees in more than 25 countries, we work together to turn challenges into opportunities and make a real impact on society. We collaborate with leading clients in markets such as infrastructure, climate resilience, renewable energy, decarbonisation of industry, and sustainable mobility.

As a graduate intern, you will become part of the Water & Maritime department based in The Netherlands.

What you bring

You are a motivated MSc student with a strong interest in coastal processes and numerical modelling. You enjoy working independently, are curious, and eager to contribute to applied research with real-world impact.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in a relevant MSc program (Coastal Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physical Geography, Earth Sciences)
  • Basic understanding of coastal morphodynamics and sediment transport
  • Affinity with numerical modelling tools (e.g., XBeach, Delft3D), experience is a plus
  • Proficient in Matlab/Python, or similar programming languages
  • Proficient in English (spoken and written)
  • You are able to travel to the office if needed

What you can expect from us

During your internship at Haskoning, you’ll have the opportunity to grow professionally in an inspiring and inclusive work environment. We offer support, guidance, and attractive conditions to help you get the most out of your internship:

  • Internship allowance of €750 per month (based on a 40-hour workweek)
  • Personal guidance from a dedicated mentor
  • Opportunity to contribute to impactful projects
  • Access to knowledge groups and development programs
  • Hybrid working and flexible hours
  • Informal and inclusive work culture with social and sports activities
