Internship Opportunities in Propulsion, Energy, and Ship Service Systems at Damen Naval

ABOUT US

Get on board with Damen Naval, the naval division of the family-owned Damen Shipyards Group, employing over 1,200 professionals in The Netherlands, Romania, and Germany. Damen Naval designs and builds advanced naval vessels for customers all over the world. With a passion for technological innovation and sustainable solutions, we continue to push the boundaries in naval shipbuilding. You can be part of our team! Are you ready for duty?

THE ROLE

Propulsion and energy systems are at the core of almost every project at Damen Naval, significantly influencing ship performance and ensuring that energy stored on board is used as efficiently and effectively as possible. Damen Naval is continuously improving its products, with a focus on developing the next generation of propulsion and energy systems. Ongoing research in this field is shaping the future of naval vessels, and supporting research is needed to provide tools and methods to further optimize the design of these systems.

Various graduate research or internship projects are available related to this topic, all supported by subject matter experts within the company. Some possible subjects include:

  • Design and integration of novel propulsion (and power generation) systems.
  • Creating tools for the design and sizing of auxiliary systems.
  • Market surveys related to alternative fuels and their handling.
  • Modeling of propulsion (and auxiliary) system dynamics and their controls.
  • Analysis of new propulsion control strategies and their applications.
  • Developing analysis methods related to ship efficiency, emissions, and performance.

A combination of different subjects is possible. Damen Naval can provide readily available assignments, but it is also possible to propose your own specific topic of interest.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

As an intern or graduate student at Damen Naval, you may encounter multiple aspects of propulsion and energy systems engineering in various phases of ship design. Depending on the assignment, you are expected to select or develop the analysis methods and engineering tools needed to achieve your research goals. You will be responsible from day one for the planning and execution of your research project. You are expected to deliver a detailed, in-depth analysis of your research problem and be able to communicate the results and conclusions to other departments.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Top class Master student in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Process Engineering, or Naval Architecture. Other equivalent fields of study may also apply or can be considered depending on the topic chosen for the assignment.
  • Passionate about ships and shipbuilding.
  • Independent, curious, analytical, and proactive.
  • Familiar with propulsion and/or energy systems (e.g. combustion engines, transmissions, heat exchangers, HVAC), preferably on board ships.
  • Basic experience with (system) simulation tools or a proven ability and specific motivation to become familiar with this subject in a very short time.
  • Able to use programming tools (e.g. Python, MATLAB, VBA).
  • Capable of identifying and communicating with multiple stakeholders.
  • Taking responsibility for your own planning and project management.
  • Good command of the Dutch and English language, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent references, as a security screening is part of the hiring process.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required. Candidates with EU (work) visa or with both an EU and non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible in accordance with the requirements imposed by the military nature of our projects.

WHAT WE OFFER

At Damen Naval, we highly value our interns, and we will support your professional and personal development. We also provide our interns with:

  • A monthly allowance for the duration of the assignment.
  • Proper mentoring will be available throughout the project.
  • The ability to test and enhance your professional and social skills.
  • Acquired experience at a top tier company to add to your reference list.

OTHER

Please note that due to the military nature of our projects, only candidates who have permanent EU nationality can be considered for vacancies at Damen Naval. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to process candidates who (also) have a non-EU passport or nationality. A pre-employment and security screening and investigation form part of the recruitment process.
