Introduction

ASML develops a custom motion control platform to shorten the development time for control functions. It provides users with an abstracted model (toolbox) to define their application and hardware interfaces. These abstract definitions are then translated into a complex deployment of software components on real-time hardware, optimized for latency (I/O delay). The platform is suitable for conventional servo control as well as more generic applications, and has found widespread use across all ASML product families.

The Motion Control department is responsible for development and maintenance of the platform. An important challenge is managing complexity, with a growing amount of internal clients and increasing performance requirements.

Your assignment

As the complexity and application scope of the platform keeps increasing, there is a need for a simple environment that demonstrates its capabilities and helps newcomers get familiar with the basic concepts. The first step towards such a demonstration setup has already been made: sensor/actuator boards have been simulated with a single Raspberry Pi. Your task, as an intern, will be to extend the current demo towards a realistic control application, such as a fridge thermostat or robot arm.

Key deliverables include:

  • Get acquainted with the motion platform.
  • Propose which control application and hardware to use. This hardware should be properly configured and described in the domain language of the framework.
  • Update driver software (written in C/C++) to bridge between protocols and to communicate I/O data with the controller.
  • Create and model a rudimentary control network in Simulink.
  • Communicate with a multi-disciplinary team of experts to acquire the relevant knowledge to integrate all parts.

This is an internship for 6-9 months, minimum 4 days per week (minimum 4 days on-site). The start date of this internship is February 2026.

Your profile

  • Background in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, control engineering or related.
  • Experience with C/C++ programming and affinity for mechanics and control.
  • Basic knowledge of (embedded) computer architecture and (real-time) Linux preferred.
  • Professional communication and documentation skills: can explain and present technical matters within the team.
  • Internal drive for efficiency and able to work disciplined, accurate and are a strong collaborator.
  • Pragmatic, pro-active, ‘self-propelling’ way of working and able to operate in a dynamic environment.

Other requirements you need to meet

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship.
  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. If you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter should include the willingness to relocate.
  • If you are a non-EU citizen studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.

We're moving technology forward
In fact, we’re probably a part of the electronic device you’re using right now. Our lithography technology is fundamental to mass producing semiconductor chips. With it, the world’s top chipmakers are creating microchips that are more powerful, faster and energy efficient.
