Seismology software developer bij het Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut

Dit ga je doen

Do you want to contribute to the safety of the Netherlands and the Caribbean Netherlands (BES islands)? As a software developer at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), you’ll work on systems that deliver critical information 24/7 about earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, nuclear tests, and tsunamis. Operating at the intersection of science, data, and technology, you’ll develop applications that have significant societal value. Your work directly supports our legal mandate and contributes to a robust infrastructure for geophysical monitoring. The impact of what you build is tangible and essential. Sounds like your dream job? Keep on reading!

How you contribute in this role

Within international bodies, you contribute to the development and implementation of standards for data management and data exchange in the seismic-acoustic domain. As part of a multidisciplinary DevOps team, you are responsible for developing, testing, and maintaining web applications and APIs that support geophysical monitoring. You create new products based on seismic-acoustic and other geophysical measurements, enabling us to inform stakeholders in a timely, accurate, and reliable manner in the event of threats - such as earthquakes, tsunamis, or nuclear tests - where rapid detection and interpretation are crucial.

You’ll work closely with scientists to translate new insights and algorithms into operational applications; a process we call research-to-operations. You’ll use modern tools and cloud environments like AWS, GitLab, Docker, and infrastructure-as-code to ensure the infrastructure is not only functional but also future-ready.

What gives you satisfaction

You thrive on combining technical complexity with societal relevance. Working in a team of developers and researchers who share a commitment to providing the best possible information to the Netherlands and the BES islands gives you energy.

You contribute to a robust, future-proof infrastructure for data acquisition and processing. Vital for fulfilling our 24/7 legal responsibilities. You take ownership of system quality, enjoy building reliable solutions, and are driven to create innovative applications. Your work matters. Every single day.

What we value in you

At KNMI, we value professionals who take ownership, show initiative and view collaboration as second nature. You’re a proactive team player with an eye for both the technical and scientific aspects of your work. You feel at home in an environment where innovation and reliability go hand in hand.

We appreciate your contribution to maintaining existing systems, but also encourage you to take initiative in developing new products and services. Experience with seismic-acoustic data acquisition and its application for monitoring earthquakes, volcanic activity, or nuclear detection is a definite plus. What connects us is our shared drive to use technology and science to create a safer society.

Over Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut

Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute

The weather is unpredictable, the ground moves, and the climate is changing. To ensure our safety and prosperity, we need to understand the risks and opportunities this presents and how best to prepare. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) provides that knowledge. As the national center of expertise and data for weather, climate, and seismology, KNMI is reliable, independent, and focused on what the Netherlands needs: a safe society that is prepared for the impact of weather, climate change, and seismic activity.

Driven by our core values - Development, Collaboration, and Relevance - we pursue our ambitions both within and beyond KNMI, nationally and internationally. We continuously develop our knowledge and skills, and work together as one KNMI to make a meaningful difference for society.

Talent as our foundation, diversity as our strength

KNMI is an inclusive organization. One that creates space for everyone and leverages the diversity of its people to achieve better results for the Netherlands. Being inclusive means that everyone feels engaged and valued: not in spite of, but because of our differences.

KNMI is part of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) is committed to a safe, accessible, and liveable Netherlands. It works to ensure strong connections via road, rail, waterways, and air. IenW also protects against flooding, monitors the quality of our air, water, and soil, and contributes to the transition toward a circular economy.
