Join Elsevier as an Associate Scientific Editor

Are you passionate about chemistry?

Are you keen to start your publishing career at a leading chemistry journal?

About the Role

We are looking for a polymer chemist to join the editorial team of Chem as an Associate Scientific Editor.

Chem is a leading chemistry journal and flagship chemistry publication at Cell Press. It provides a unified home for landmark fundamental and applied studies, reviews, and commentaries across all chemistry disciplines and interfaces to other sciences: chemistry that inspires, solves big problems, and drives change.

This entry-level role is designed for those pursuing a career in publishing. You will assess manuscript submissions, manage the peer-review process, and ensure articles are rigorous, relevant, and impactful. You will also engage with researchers to expand the journal’s network of authors and readers, travel to international conferences, and visit research institutes.

A unique aspect of this role is dedicating up to 50% of your time to support the launch of a new journal, Chem Circularity, a spin-out from Chem. You will also work closely with colleagues across Operations, Production, Marketing, and other editorial teams in physical sciences and sustainability, embracing a One Cell Press ethos.

This is an exciting opportunity to help develop a leading chemistry journal further while supporting the successful launch of a new title and contributing to the broader Cell Press journal portfolio. Join an inclusive, supportive, passionate, and fun international team, play an essential role in serving the scientific community, and make an impact with your unique personal approach.

This position is based in one of our European offices (Oxford, London, or Amsterdam) with flexible working options.

Responsibilities

  • Reading, assessing, and triaging submissions;
  • Finding referees and managing the peer-review process;
  • Making editorial decisions (accept/reject/transfer) and writing decision letters;
  • Recruiting research articles and commissioning reviews and opinion pieces;
  • Engaging with the scientific community (conferences, institutional visits, calls);
  • Working up to 50% of the time on Chem Circularity, initially;
  • Supporting other Cell Press titles with submission transfers, content recruitment, and promotion;
  • Collaborating with Marketing on strategies and campaigns;
  • Supporting Editorial Operations and Production with manuscript handling and publication;
  • Contributing to social media posts and writing short editorial pieces.

Requirements

  • Proven expertise in polymer synthesis, materials characterization, and properties;
  • Additional experience in related or unrelated areas of research is a plus (sustainability, circularity, upcycling/recycling, catalysis, other chemistry disciplines, biology);
  • Passion for fundamental research and strong interest in communicating science;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Availability to travel within Europe multiple times a year.
