Physics | mathematics internship: model migration C to MATLAB

Introduction

Our team orchestrates the behavior of powerful mechatronic modules, achieving an extraordinary combination of speed and accuracy. For example, one such module (a wafer stage) accelerates faster than a fighter jet to enable the ASML machine to position a silicon wafer in less than a second, with nanometer accuracy!

To achieve such challenging results, the best metrology systems ever imagined are required. It is the brain of ASML lithography systems.

To ensure the ever-shrinking of the integrated circuits printed by ASML machines, we need people who can help us build next-generation metrology products.

Your assignment

Your main tasks & responsibilities are:

Convert Mathematical Algorithms:

  • Translate existing mathematical algorithms from C to MATLAB. This involves understanding the current C code, including its structure, logic, and mathematical foundations.
  • You will need to rewrite these algorithms in MATLAB, ensuring that the mathematics and functionality are preserved. This task requires a deep understanding of both programming languages and the ability to interpret mathematical concepts.
  • You will document the conversion process, highlighting any challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to overcome them. This documentation will serve as a valuable resource for future reference and for other team members who may work on similar tasks.

Create Testers:

  • Develop testers to verify that the output remains consistent between the original C code and the new MATLAB implementation.

Your profile

To be a match for this internship you:

  • Are a final-year bachelor or master student in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field looking for an apprentice internship.
  • Have programming experience C and MATLAB and a strong mathematical background.
  • Are familiar with data analysis and modeling. Knowledge about software development is a plus (GIT).
  • You like to investigate issues; you are creative in solving problems and you do not fear to present your solutions. You are able to explain complex physical models and algorithms in a crisp way, without omitting the essentials.
  • You are decisive and self-initiating in an ambiguous environment and have a pragmatic approach and a pro-active attitude, with a result focus and a 'can do' spirit.

This is a final-year bachelor or master student looking for an apprentice internship for a minimum of 6 months, for 4 to 5 days per week (at least 3 days onsite). The start date of this internship is September 2025.

Other requirements you need to meet

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
