Mechanical Engineering Internship: Two-way coupling of 1D and 3D CFD

Introduction

ASML uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to ensure the optimal environmental conditions for the optical components in these machines to maximize output of the machine, to expand the lifetime and/or minimize the service intervals. Different computational methods and tools are in use at ASML to model low pressure systems. Each modeling approach has its advantages and pitfalls.

Your Assignment

An internship project has been done previously to understand how the coupling between two modeling approaches works. A few simple cases have been tested by using functional mockup interface (FMI) to perform 2-way coupled simulation. The results were compared with standalone CFD models and DSMC. This internship will extend this work for complex geometries. It is also important to investigate how the physics in the two solvers could be integrated to attain modeling consistency.

The assignment will be divided into the following incremental steps:

1. Fundamentals of rarefied flow and modeling principles.
2. Network modeling basics in AMEsim for rarefied gas flow.
3. Familiarization with the existing vacuum system CFD models.
4. Setting up simple 1D-3D coupled problems using Functional Mockup with the existing method.
5. Studying complex CFD vacuum system models and determining potential regions where AMEsim-CFD coupling can be used.
6. Prepare a step-by-step guideline to describe AMEsim-CFD model interoperability for simple and complex geometries.
7. Discussion with Siemens support for any improvements in FMI workflow.
8. Prepare a final internal report on the project.

This is a Master internship, both an apprentice or graduation, for the duration of 6 or more months, 5 days a week, starting as soon as possible.

Your Profile

To be a match for this internship, you:

• Are a master student in the direction of Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering;
• Have experience in CFD and maybe network modeling for fluid flow system;
• Preferably have experience in StarCCM+ or Fluent, AMEsim, EcoSim and/or MacroFlow or similar;
• Preferably have experience with using High performance cluster is a plus;
• Have strong analytical skills and a problem-solving mentality;
• Feel comfortable in approaching experts and arranging support;
• Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet:

• You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
• You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
• If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
