Physics internship: numerical or experimental investigation of fiber optics

Within ASML scanners there are many applications where fiber optics play a crucial role in transporting, shaping or even generating light with the right properties. Examples are found in various sensors, light sources and thermal conditioning of mirrors. Together with these applications, the fiber optics used are also becoming increasingly demanding and complex, beyond commercially available solutions. The fiber optics competence strives to unify the way of working within ASML and create commonality between applications.

Your Assignment

As an intern working within the fiber optics competence team, you will work to deepen our understanding of fiber optics physics by optimizing fiber optics designs, performing simulations and experiments and creating documentation overviews to help set a common baseline for fiber optics at ASML.

The assignment can involve the following topics:

  • Fiber optics connectorization;
  • Multi-mode fiber applications;
  • Beam profile optimization;
  • Photonic crystal fibers.

This is a Bachelor or Master graduation/apprentice internship for 6 to 12 months, minimum 4 days per week. The start date of this internship is flexible, around September.
During the interviews, possible assignments and more specifics can be discussed. The internship can be tailored to your interests.

Your Profile

To be a fit for this assignment, you:

  • Are busy with your bachelor's or master's in Physics, Optics, Photonics or any related field;
  • Have hands on optical lab experience (preferably fiber optics knowledge) or possess experience with data analysis, like MATLAB, Python, etc;
  • Have a proactive approach in problem-solving;
  • Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
