Graduation Assignment – EMC/EMP Resistant Hardware at Royal IHC

IHC always strives for the best solution for its customers, even when it comes to complex controls. Are you looking for an electrical hardware challenge at IHC, to optimize the design of Electro-Magnetic Compatible hardware? If so, this graduation position at Royal IHC is perfect for you.

Internship Project description

IHC designs and delivers vessels equipped with specialized equipment for various markets.

In some cases, IHC encounters specifications where the equipment needs to be designed for Electro Magnetic Compatibility, having no interference due to electro magnetic fields of other components or machinery. In addition, in some cases the equipment also needs to comply with electro magnetic pulse requirements. Can you help us to optimize the engineering process for selecting hardware components and designing the hardware?

The engineering department of IHC SAS-Hytop is responsible for the delivery of the detailed design drawing package for the construction and delivery of mission equipment such as winches, pipe tensioners and hydraulic installations. This equipment can be installed on IHC ships, on third-party ships or on other floaters. Next to delivery of the detailed design drawing packages to the workshop, the engineers also communicate with the workshop, class bureaus and customer on a daily basis.

The Challenge

In this graduation project, you will be responsible for advising on the best way to comply with EMC requirements. Depending on the scope and progress of your project, EMP requirements may also be included.

This is done by investigating the standards, available solutions in the market as well as hardware solutions for other applications. You will investigate whether EMC resistance on component level can be achieved, if an EMC cabinet is needed to protect the hardware inside or if a combination of both can be used.

Based on the acquired knowledge, you will describe general design guidelines for (at least) EMC-proof hardware.

After completion, you will deliver a report describing design guidelines and possibly designs for design of hardware that is resistant to EMC and possibly to EMP. Your task is to clearly define the activities needed for the study and perform a relevant part of it. To achieve this, you will be involved in a wide range of tasks and have the following responsibilities:

  • Defining specifications for the hardware and selecting a reference case.
  • Function analysis of the hardware in a use case.
  • Overview of possible configurations for the use case with overall cost price.
  • Liaising with SAS-Hytop engineers on their day-to-day design and their approach to these areas.
  • Liaising with other departments within SAS-Hytop (sales, management) to collect information needed.
  • Liaising with external companies for parts of the hardware, for example companies specialized in other applications.
  • Recording the selected configurations in sufficient detail in sketches, specifications, calculations, and the final report as a basis for further development of the shock-proof hardware.

In short, you are expected to make an important contribution to the development of optimal shock-proof hardware solutions.

Your Profile

To effectively discuss and inform the organization and colleagues about developments and initiatives in this field and the Royal IHC way of working, you must be an articulate, confident, and self-driven individual who can take the initiative. To be eligible for this position, you must have:

  • A vocational education (HBO or WO);
  • A study focused on electrical engineering;
  • Knowledge and/or interest in mission equipment technology in a marine environment;
  • Experience with analytical studies using collected data input – experience with and/or interest in component selection and validation is preferred;
  • A good command of the English language, both verbally and written;
  • The ability of using feedback to improve the quality of your work;
  • The ability to work independently and to be self-critical.

We offer

  • An internship allowance of €425 gross per month based on a full-time work week.
  • Travel allowance (public transport or mileage allowance)
  • Flexible working hours.
  • The opportunity to contribute to the future of the maritime industry.
