About GitLab

GitLab is an open core software company that develops the most comprehensive AI-powered DevSecOps Platform, used by more than 100,000 organizations. Our mission is to enable everyone to contribute to and co-create the software that powers our world. When everyone can contribute, consumers become contributors, significantly accelerating the rate of human progress. This mission is integral to our culture, influencing how we hire, build products, and lead our industry. We make this possible at GitLab by running our operations on our product and staying aligned with our values.

Thanks to products like Duo Enterprise and Duo Workflow, customers get the benefit of AI at every stage of the SDLC. The same principles built into our products are reflected in how our team works: we embrace AI as a core productivity multiplier. All team members are encouraged and expected to incorporate AI into their daily workflows to drive efficiency, innovation, and impact across our global organisation.

An overview of this role

The Engineering Manager specializes in the management of people, with a specific focus on Software Supply Chain Security. This role will lead a team building features within the Software Supply Chain Security stage, primarily focused on CI job artifact security as expressed via the SLSA compliance framework. Engineering Managers at GitLab see their team as their product. While they are technically credible and know the details of what engineers work on, their time is spent safeguarding their team's health, hiring a world-class team, and putting them in the best position to succeed. They own the delivery of product commitments and are always looking to improve productivity. They must also coordinate across departments to accomplish collaborative goals.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead a team focused on developing features for Software Supply Chain Security, with a primary focus on CI job artifact security
  • Guide the implementation of SLSA compliance framework into GitLab CI/CD pipeline features
  • Collaborate with Product Managers to define and prioritize the roadmap for Supply Chain Security features
  • Stay current with industry standards and best practices in software supply chain security, particularly SLSA, SBOM, and vulnerability management
  • Partner with Security team members to ensure features meet the highest security standards
  • Educate and advocate for supply chain security best practices across GitLab
  • Represent GitLab in industry forums related to software supply chain security when appropriate

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience with software supply chain security concepts and tools
  • Understanding of the SLSA (Supply-chain Levels for Software Artifacts) framework and its application in CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiarity with software artifact provenance, attestation, and verification techniques
  • Knowledge of secure software development practices
  • Experience with CI/CD systems and their security considerations
  • Understanding of container security concepts
  • Familiarity with software composition analysis and vulnerability management
  • Experience implementing SLSA compliance in production environments is ideal, but not required

Performance Indicators

In addition to the standard Engineering Manager performance indicators, this role will also be measured on:

  • Successful implementation of SLSA framework components into GitLab CI/CD
  • Adoption rate of supply chain security features by GitLab users
  • Reduction in security vulnerabilities related to CI job artifacts
  • Team velocity on supply chain security feature development
  • Integration completeness with other GitLab security features
  • Community engagement around GitLab's supply chain security capabilities
  • Documentation quality for supply chain security features

About the team

The Pipeline Security team is responsible for making CI pipelines more secure and trustworthy for users. We're currently focused on two major initiatives that will significantly improve GitLab's security posture: developing a native secrets management system and implementing SLSA L3 compliance features. Our work directly impacts the security of thousands of organizations' software supply chains.
