The Opto-Mechanical Architect takes ownership of the specification, conceptual design, and qualification of opto-mechanical tools, which are reliable, safe, contamination free, cost effective and easy to manufacture and service within the restrictions imposed by specifications, costs and planning considerations.

Role and responsibilities

As an Opto-mechanical architect, you will provide technical leadership to a team of ~10 engineers and/or co-developers responsible for the development of optomechanical tooling for ASML’s Light Sources. You interface cross project with other function and domain architects, lead engineers in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Derive specifications for tooling from functional requirements in the area of manufacturing and service.
  • Create and validate new concepts; make sure there is consensus with stakeholders.
  • Comply to precision mechanical and opto-mechanical construction principles and competence standards.
  • Prepare and commit to planning for tooling, matching the project needs.
  • Define qualification tests, verifying the tooling performance.
  • The Opto-Mechanical Architect reports to the Group Leader Opto-Mechanical Tooling and is operational within multidisciplinary projects.

Education and experience

  • Master or PhD degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronic / Optics
    • MSc + minimum of 7 years’ experience.
    • PhD + minimum of 5 years’ experience.
  • Track record of opto- and/or precision-mechanical designs, well-developed analytical skills, knowledgeable in requirements, creating new designs from concept to detail and a pragmatic attitude.
  • Excellent knowledge in the field of designing for manufacturability of optical or mechanical parts and assemblies in low volumes.
  • Experienced CAD user (preferably NX), and familiar with PLM systems. Experienced in evaluating FEM / mechanical analysis results.
  • Experience with geometrical optics, raytracing (ZEMAX), affinity to learn optics. Preferably in depth knowledge.
  • Preferably an already experienced technical leader.
  • Excellent knowledge in the field of manufacturability of optical and mechanical parts and of designing of opto-mechanical constructions.

  • Highly motivated team player with excellent social, coordination and communication skills (English).
  • Ability to work in an international multicultural setting. Flexible and open mindset with a can do mentality anticipating on a challenging and dynamic environment.
  • Helicopter view (zoom in – zoom out).
  • Eager to drive own development.

Other information

Within ASML the sector Development & Engineering is responsible for the specification and the design of the ASML products. The department Mechanical Development is designing, building and testing mechanical systems and sub-systems which are fitted into the end products.

As a part of the department Mechanical Engineering the group Manufacturing and Service Tooling is responsible for the specification, engineering and qualification of tooling that is required for manufacturing and servicing of ASML modules (enabling e.g. precision adjustments, qualification, etc.)

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
