Msc: Internship/Graduate Assignment - Mechanical Engineering

Company: Canon Production Printing

Msc: Internship/Graduate Assignment - Mechanical Engineering
Subtitle: Develop innovative measurement techniques for print head distance or droplet airflow interaction.

Are you a Master's student in Mechanical Engineering looking for a challenging research project? We have two possible options for you!

Your Assignment

Option 1: Print Head Distance Measurement (Internship Only)
Canon Production Printing develops several high-end digital inkjet printer systems for the high-volume and graphic arts professional printing markets. For these machines, print quality is of major importance. One of the aspects of delivering this print quality is by accurately positioning the print heads with respect to the media.

To ensure this distance, you are going to develop a process that uses the existing system’s hardware to measure the distance by just printing smart patterns. These prints are scanned by our printers, and you implement a processing method of the data using MATLAB or Python. To verify the performance of your process, you build up statistics and gain confidence in the accuracy of the solution. You also use external measurements for verification purposes.

In this assignment, you make a strong contribution to our future products by enabling remote accuracy measurement. This measurement also helps in better understanding our mechanical tolerances such as thermal expansion or mechanical self-positioning.

Option 2: Droplet Airflow Interaction Measurement (Internship or Thesis)
Canon Production Printing develops several high-end digital inkjet printer systems for the high-volume and graphic arts professional printing markets. For these machines, print quality is of major importance. One of the interactions our inkjet machines have to deal with is the drag that is imposed on the ink droplets being jetted on the media.

A disturbance of the droplet’s trajectory of only several microns can cause a significant disturbance in our print quality. Your assignment is to create a method that helps us understand these disturbances. You develop a pattern that visualizes these deviations on an actual print, and an algorithm to quantify it. As a result, you are able to analyze the deviations on paper and compare them to your theoretical model.

You will become creative in designing the optimal pattern to increase the deviations, making the accuracy of your measurement as good as possible. As a result, you bring a tool to our R&D that helps us in quantifying and solving print quality artifacts for future products.

Your Profile:

  • You are currently studying for a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • You have an affinity for fluid dynamics and digital image processing (only for option 2).
  • You are proficient with Matlab or Python.
  • You are analytical, innovative, and enjoy tackling complex technical challenges.
  • You are available to start as soon as possible.

What’s in it for you?

  • A challenging assignment with skilled coaching.
  • Internship/Graduation compensation of €500,- per month.
  • Travel cost compensation if you don’t have an ‘OV-weekcard’.
  • The possibility to network with professionals inside and outside your field of expertise, thanks to our diversity of disciplines which you will work with.
  • With our company values collaboration, innovation, and ownership, we strive to bring out the best in each other, expand boundaries, and feel empowered to take ownership of our work.
