Mechatronics internship: investigation on system machine states

Introduction

Within Machine Conditioning, our team's mission is to optimize the reliability, availability, serviceability, and cycle time of precision manufacturing equipment as it moves from the early development phase to operations at international customer sites. Our Manufacturing and Equipment Engineers make sure that all work instructions, diagnostics, tools, trainings and spare parts are available for the manufacturing and customer-support operational sectors.

Your Assignment

System Machine States (SMSs) define distinct operational phases of a machine or system, each containing a sequence of procedures tailored to the current status and objectives of the system. Traditionally, these procedures are executed sequentially to maintain order and ensure logical consistency. However, as systems become more complex and demand for higher throughput increases, sequential execution may lead to suboptimal cycle times. This internship aims to investigate and implement improvements in the system’s operational efficiency by analyzing and optimizing the cycle time of various procedures executed during specific System Machine States (SMSs). The focus will be on identifying opportunities for parallelization of actions within these states to reduce overall processing time without compromising safety, synchronization, or system integrity.

Your initial tasks will include:

  • Collect and analyze SMS data specific to NXE machines;
  • Utilize the PLET (Procedure Lifecycle Engineering Tool) to manage and optimize the lifecycle of procedures involved in SMS investigations;
  • Conduct thorough investigations into the SMS’s of the NXE machines;
  • Identify anomalies, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement in the production process;
  • Prepare detailed reports on findings and present recommendations for parallel actions to decrease cycle time;
  • Collaborate with sequence engineering and production teams to implement recommended actions;
  • Monitor the impact of implemented actions on cycle time and overall factory performance;
  • Apply these learnings on the creation of the new SMSs for NXE machines (if needed).

This is a Bachelor graduation or apprentice internship for around 5-6 months, working 4-5 days per week. The start date of this internship is as soon as possible, or at the latest around September 2025.

Your Profile

To be suitable for this internship you:

  • Are a Bachelor student in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field;
  • Have strong collaboration and interpersonal skills;
  • Have analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Have some experience with Microsoft Office applications and data analysis tools/techniques;
  • Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
