The Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (WdKA/RUAS), offers a variety of bachelor and master programs in the field of visual culture, art, design, education in arts, and leisure management. The curriculum of the Willem de Kooning Academy is founded in an interdisciplinary ethos in which research through making, theoretical reflection and participatory practices form the three pillars of the Institute. The Piet Zwart Institute, is part of the WdKA, hosting four full time and two part-time international masters in art, design and art education. The programs work experimentally across different media and contexts, offering a rich combination of in-depth specialization and interdisciplinary exchange. We educate professionals who have a critically reflective, questioning and imaginative approach to their work.
Master Interior Architecture: Research + Design (MIARD)
The Master Interior Architecture: Research + Design (MIARD) invites qualified candidates to apply for a design position in spatial practices. The new curriculum module focuses on the visual culture of expanded spatial practices, critically examining how spatial environments are shaped by current events, issues, and crises. Emphasizing the complex, mediated realities of inter-species experience in the 21st century, the course explores aesthetics, spatial imaginaries, representation, and the theory and practice of space and architecture in relation to visual culture. Planned with thematic lectures and a studio-based Spatial Lab for self-directed research, collective exchange, and the production of spatial conjecture. Additionally, the new tutor will contribute as a design supervisor during the graduation project.
The profile of the candidate is one who identifies with—and can push forward—the multi-disciplinary, design and research-intensive approach of the program. We are looking for a spatial practitioner and educator whose work expands across visual studies and architecture, who has a background in architecture, design or whose professional practice is grounded in spatial thinking. Moreover, the course requires a practitioner who explores the visual culture of spatial practice as an emerging field.
The job involves a high degree of responsibility, contributory influence and the opportunity to align your individual practice and research with a broader community of professionals and students. On an annual basis, the tutor works collaboratively with other core tutors within MIARD’s program. MIARD is a nationally accredited program with a focus on practice-based research and critical spatial strategies in the field of interior architecture.
