MISSION TO METRICS

The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop and scale advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. In the Rivers team, we aim to intercept floating plastic in the most polluted rivers in the world to prevent it being emitted into the oceans.

The Analysis & Performance team contributes to the success of The Ocean Cleanup by ensuring that the decision-making processes in Rivers are grounded in reliable data.

In the Analysis & Performance team, we use cameras to monitor plastics and other items on and around the river and our operations. Your role is to analyze datasets from different cameras to make better time series of plastic flux in rivers and analyze the time series to get better forecasting of plastic flux in rivers based on limited datasets or similar methods.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze data in a computer vision pipeline to create time series of plastic flux.
  • Analyze time-series of this plastic flux and assess quality to find outliers in the time series. Proposals and implementation of improvements in the algorithm.
  • Analyze time series of plastic flux from different locations to create forecasting of annual plastic flux values based on hydrological and environmental parameters of these locations.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrolled in an MSc-level computer science, data science, physics or similar track.
  • Experienced with Python
  • Affinity with data analysis and vision data
  • Fluent in English

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Keen to do structured and detailed data exploration and create insights from data analysis from large datasets
  • Curious, creative, and determined to deliver
  • Not afraid for a deep dive into technical matters
  • Eye for detail
  • Flexible team player
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • Starting date: May 2025
  • Duration: 6 months - 3 to 5 days per week
