The Workboats Division is one of the four ship-newbuild domains at Damen Shipyards, alongside Offshore & Specialized Vessels, Yachting, and Naval. Workboats focuses on designing, engineering, building, and commissioning Workboats like High Speed Craft, Fast Ferries, Stationary Dredgers, and Tugs.

As technology within the Shipbuilding industry advances rapidly, Damen Workboats aims to remain at the forefront, continuously exploring new methods for development, design, standardization, and optimization of innovative systems.

The Technology Management department of the Workboats division is tasked with technology development and standardization of the ship’s systems portfolio, leveraging modular and scalable solutions.

Role: (Jr.) Technology Specialist

We are seeking a (jr.) Technology specialist for the system platform team “Main machinery” within the Technology Management department. A system platform team is multi-disciplinary, responsible for the entire (standard) system throughout its lifecycle, covering technical content, supply chain, production, quality control, knowledge management, and documentation for in-service support.

The system owner Main Machinery leads the team and is accountable for the main machinery systems across the entire Workboats product portfolio. The system platform includes domains like Propulsion, Power Generating, and Maneuvering & Seakeeping systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development and standardization of modular and scalable system families, variants, and options for the entire Damen Workboats portfolio.
  • Manage concept development projects within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Set requirements by considering business needs and market opportunities.
  • Convert requirements into functional and conceptual designs with team specialists/engineers.
  • Develop required deliverables like system definition documents, specifications, functional descriptions, and system principles for modular engineering building blocks.
  • Support and review Engineering information.
  • Guide technology development with suppliers and partners by setting needs & requirements and reviewing technical solutions.
  • Contribute to knowledge management by documenting knowledge in system principles, instructions, and training.
  • Advise and support Product platform teams with technology selection and implementation.
  • Perform FMEA analysis, HAZID studies, and arrange class approval.
  • Write detailed test and validation plans to ensure compliance with regulations and validate during simulation and testing.

  • Willing to travel (based in The Netherlands).

You have:

  • An academic level with a bachelor's and/or master's degree in a technical direction, e.g., Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Process Automation, or Electrical Engineering, or another technical study involving integration of complex systems.
  • Demonstrable knowledge in this technical domain within a relevant industry.
  • Experience applying Systems Engineering principles.
  • Experience with developing and integrating (marine) installations, including third-party cooperation.
  • Familiarity with (marine) industry standards and regulations.
  • A high-quality consciousness and accuracy.
  • Effective communication skills in English, Dutch is a plus.
