The SEA Materials team in Dyson Technology Development Department, supports Research, Design and Development (RDD) to define the plastic parts requirements (PRS), to identify and match those requirements with the most appropriate material grade and then conduct internal material plaque level properties verification then work together with RDD, Tooling and Testing team to mould parts, assembled them into machine and go for machine level verification/validation.

About the role

We are looking for a Materials Intern to support a live project, where he/she will be able to go through the material specification development process and how it interacts with other teams to define/verify/optimize the parts performances requirements meeting the Dyson final product specification. As part of Southeast Asia Technology Development Materials team, you will experience the fast-paced project development process. Working together with other team from across the business as well as material suppliers to ensure the project material readiness deliverables are closed in timely manner and reported to stakeholders.

When you join us as a Materials intern, you will be assigned to support a live project under the lead Material engineer in-charge of that project. You will be expected to participate all meetings with RDD team to go through the PRS review process, to understand how the material specification development process works. Working as part of a larger Material team projects, you will have your own set of material project deliverables and the chance to take ownership of how these material deliverables are achieved. Some of your tasks could include:

  • Conceptualizing, developing, and proposing multiple criterion material search scenarios to optimize material selections.

  • Developing an analytic and critical thinking mindset in the material datasheet review process.

  • Using multiple criterion material search tools and data analysis to help to make the right material selection to address critical part requirements precisely.

  • Exposure to many material test methods to verify material performance both in plaques and parts/assembled level.

  • Conducting material tests, analysing the data, and proposing appropriate material grades which meet the PRS requirements.

  • Identifying materials that address material related problems from Production or Markets.

  • Integrate into the day-to-day operation of the team

About you

Working at the forefront of technology is tough so standards and expectations are high. You will be contributing to live projects from the start so you will need to be curious, hungry to learn and ready to get stuck in. But it is not just about technical expertise. Our internships are competitive and delivering the next generation of Dyson technology is tough, so you will need to:

  • Studying towards a bachelor's or master's degree in chemistry, Polymeric Material Science or Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline

  • Able to commit for at least 12 weeks and graduating by Q3 2025

  • Be passionate about Material chemical/mechanical analysis and understand fundamental principles in injection moulding process, ASTM/ISO Material testing standards and Material Failure analysis.

  • Able to evidence how you have applied your technical knowledge to solve problems, either through your university projects or as part of your extra-curricular activities

  • Happy to build your own networks to learn from the technical expertise around you

  • Creative in your approach to problem solving to ensure our machines are better

  • Passionate about Dyson and our technology to help us meet our ambitious plans
