The Department of Media Studies is looking for fixed-term Lecturers to teach in the Media Studies BA programme, specifically in the track Media and Culture. You can find the full curriculum here. Lecturers who have a PhD may also be asked to teach courses in the related Master’s programmes.

Candidates should have expertise in theoretical and cultural approaches within Media Studies and the Humanities more broadly, as well as knowledge of contemporary disciplinary developments in film studies, television studies and/or cross-media culture. Successful candidates will be a member of the subject team for Film Studies or for Television and Cross Media Culture.

What are you going to do?

Lecturers are expected to be able to teach a variety of subjects in the Media and Culture BA, including courses in media research, media aesthetics, philosophy of the humanities, and current themes in media culture. Teaching duties may also include mentoring students and supervising theses. With a PhD, Lecturers also may teach in the Master’s degree programmes.

Tasks and responsibilities

Under the supervision of a course coordinator, you will be teaching in the Media Studies BA programmes, specifically in the track Media and Culture. Your tasks will comprise:

  • teaching seminars groups;
  • marking assignments, papers and/or theses, providing input on tests and test questions, entering marks;
  • attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and developing course materials or assignments according to relevant teaching methods, working in collaboration with colleagues and the course coordinator;
  • coordinating practical matters relating to your own seminar group[s] (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
  • supervising theses (Bachelor’s and [with a PhD] Master’s) and providing other individual supervision to students (mentoring, coaching and/or supervising internships).

What do you have to offer?

Your experience and profile:

Candidates need to have the following qualifications:

  • minimum qualification: a research-oriented Master’s degree in Media Studies or a related discipline;
  • You are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to foster students’ understanding, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers).
  • if teaching in a related Master’s programme, you have a PhD in a relevant field;
  • teaching or teaching-support experience at university level, preferably with a focus on Film and/or Television and Cross Media Culture;
  • affinity with ICTs in academic education and experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the Film and TVCMC team and to collaborate in teaching teams;
  • administrative experience and skills;
  • University Teaching Qualification, or willingness to acquire this within two years.
  • you are able to teach in English.
  • you have a good command of the Dutch language. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II;

What can we offer you?

We offer temporary employment for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 30.4 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 3,226 to € 5,090 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
