Senior Data Engineer

ABN AMRO’s Central Data Office (CDO) leads the bank’s data-driven transformation. Within Data Management Engineering (DME), you work with engineers, analysts, and data scientists to build cloud-based capabilities that make data accessible, trusted, and actionable across the bank.

Your job

As a Senior Data Engineer, you design and build scalable pipelines using Azure Databricks, PySpark and Delta Lake. You help enhance data governance, lineage, and visualisation features and contribute to the Managed Consuming solution, enabling consistent Integrated Data Sets. You experiment, propose improvements, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative, business-critical capabilities using Azure PaaS and SaaS.

Your profile

You effortlessly translate complex technical topics into clear language for both technical and non-technical audiences. You prioritise effectively, stay calm under pressure, and thrive in dynamic environments. You bring solid experience in:

• Data Pipelines & ETL Development: Databricks, PySpark, Spark, Delta Lake
• Data Governance & Storage: Unity Catalog, ADLS Gen2, Blob Storage
• Data Integration & Analytics: Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Azure SQL, MS-SQL, MySQL
• Cloud & DevOps: Azure Databricks, Azure SQL, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Key Vault
• Testing & Quality: Unit/integration testing for Spark ETL, schema enforcement, data validation
• Collaboration & Practices: Git workflows, code reviews, clean and maintainable engineering

Required skills

• Hands-on expertise in Azure Databricks, Synapse, PySpark, and distributed data processing
• Strong Python and SQL for ETL development
• Experience with data lakes (ADLS Gen2, Blob Storage) and Unity Catalog governance
• Strong DevOps and CI/CD experience (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
• Knowledge of secure secrets handling via Key Vault
• Experience with Git and collaborative engineering practices

Soft Skills

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Clear communication and cross-team collaboration
• Independent mindset and comfort in fast-moving Agile environments
• High attention to detail and commitment to data quality

Preferred

• 5–7 years of experience in data engineering or Spark-based ETL
• Azure / DevOps / Databricks certifications
• Experience with large-scale, distributed data systems and enterprise data lakes
