About the role

Due to our strong growth and big ambitions, we’re strengthening our finance team with a Junior Financial Controller. You’ll help keep our day-to-day finance operations running smoothly and support the team in building a finance function that scales. You will be part of a close-knit finance team of five people, with massive learning potential for an early-career finance professional and with direct exposure to CFO.

What makes this role exciting: OpenUp’s finance team is in the middle of actively reshaping its workflows using AI automation. It is streamlining processes and cutting out manual work. You will be part of this ongoing effort to shape smarter processes and raise the quality of reporting and controls. You are expected to have an open mind and have the opportunity to acquire your own AI automation skills along the way. Less admin, more impact. This will teach you finance as well as AI skills.

What you’ll do

You will help keep our finance engine running smoothly — and make it smarter every month. Expect a mix of operations, month-end support, and improving how we work:

  • AP: Own the our account payable invoice flow (automated in ‘Moss’): process invoices, check coding/VAT, keep approvals moving, and help colleagues get set up
  • AR: Help us get paid: follow up on outstanding invoices and keep debtor lists moving
  • Support month-end close: post month-end entries and help us close accurately and on time
  • Help prepare our monthly management report: provide monthly insights to OpenUp’s management team and investors, and learn how finance supports decisions on growth and profitability
  • Keep things clean and reconciled: perform bank reconciliations, follow up on differences, and support balance sheet reconciliations. Truly understand our finances.
  • Act as business partner to the rest of OpenUp: respond to incoming requests via the Finance mailbox and use your finance knowledge to help other teams
  • Be a thought partner to the outside world: solve customer requests and respond to requests from banks, tax authorities, etc.
  • Prepare audit deliverables: help collect evidence, prep schedules, and keep documentation organised and audit-ready
  • Always in the background - Improve our way of working: monitor what’s already AI-automated, help cut manual steps using new AI agents, and repair when something breaks

About you

You’ll likely recognise yourself in this:

  • You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or are close to completion) in Accounting & Control, Finance, Business Administration or similar
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience (junior finance role, or trainee/internship)
  • You’re comfortable with operational accounting tasks (AP/AR, reconciliations, supporting month-end)
  • You’re structured, accurate, and proactive — you spot issues and fix them
  • You’re confident working with systems and spreadsheets (Excel / Google Sheets)
  • Experience with Exact Online and AP software (we use Moss) is a plus
  • You’re fluent in English (if you are fluent in Dutch as well that is a plus)
