We are looking for a nanofabrication quantum engineer to join the Quantum Internet Division at QuTech. Our team is dynamic and inclusive, with each member bringing unique perspectives and expertise to innovative research in semiconductor quantum technology.

The Quantum Internet division develops scalable photonic quantum technologies for networking and distributed quantum computing. Our work centers on designing, fabricating, and integrating high-performance photonic quantum devices, including waveguides, resonators, and spin-photon interfaces. We pioneer advanced nanofabrication processes to enable precise control, efficient readout, and large-scale integration of quantum photonic components, while also investigating emergent phenomena in complex photonic systems.

A key driver of impact in this field is the realization of reliable, high-quality integrated photonic devices. This demands continuous refinement of fabrication workflows spanning lithography, etching, deposition, and characterization, combined with a rigorous methodological approach to ensure reproducibility and yield across process runs.

As a nanofabrication engineer within the Quantum Internet division, you will work closely with multidisciplinary teams developing photonic quantum hardware, contributing to the optimization of device designs and fabrication recipes to accelerate our research. Operating primarily from the two university cleanrooms, you will collaborate with material growth and processing specialists as well as device physicists. Your role will be central to translating designs into functional quantum photonic chips and advancing scalable fabrication strategies for next-generation quantum networks and processors.

We offer you a unique opportunity where every day brings new challenges and where, as part of a team, you will contribute to cutting-edge research in quantum computing and semiconductor technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Nanofabrication process development through staying up to date with developments in integrated photonic fabrication.
  • Analysis and inspection of quantum photonic devices, establishing effective feedback and feedforward systems.
  • Nanofabrication processing with a focus on quantum photonic devices in silicon, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and other materials.
  • Stabilization of currently running processes and set up of regular fabrication runs.
  • Process transfer from and to PhD students.
  • Processes include deposition, e-beam, focused-ion, and optical lithography, dry and wet etching, lift-off, CPD, and dicing.
  • Coordination with 3-4 research groups.

Requirements

Whether you are about to complete your Ph.D. with experience in fabrication and nanolithography, or you are an experienced quantum engineer, this role is tailored for you. We value not only experience and skills but also your passion for this field and the right attitude. Whether you are junior or senior, we will adapt the role, provide appropriate training or challenges, and support your growth and success in this position.

The main qualifications we are looking for are:

  • Experience with the nanofabrication of nanodevices, e-beam lithography, and other deposition and etching techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Will make you stand out:

  • Previous experience in the Kavli nanolab and EKL in TU Delft.
  • Familiarity with integrated photonic concepts and applications.
  • Prior experience in a research or industrial setting focused on photonic device fabrication or quantum technology.

QuTech

QuTech is a mission-driven research institute of TU Delft. Together we are working on a radical new technology with world-changing potential. We are developing scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and a secure quantum internet.

To achieve our ambitious goals, we bring scientists, engineers, and industry together in an inspiring environment, with plenty of room for ambition, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

Conditions of employment

As a nanofabrication engineer, you will receive a 1-year project-based contract with the possibility of extension. We offer two salary scales: Scale 10 (€ 3378 to € 5531) for junior to mid-senior candidates and Scale 11 (€ 4537 to € 6209) for senior candidates. This range reflects our commitment to supporting professionals at different stages of their career and offering competitive compensation.

  • 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
  • An excellent pension scheme via the ABP.
  • The possibility to compile an individual employment package every year.
  • Discount with health insurers on supplemental packages.
  • Flexible working week.
  • Every year, 232 leave hours (at 38 hours). You can also sell or buy additional leave hours via the individual choice budget.
  • Plenty of opportunities for education, training and courses.
  • Partially paid parental leave.
  • Attention for working healthy and energetically with the vitality program.
