As a Sensor Engineer at Lely, you play a key role in shaping the data-driven intelligence of our robotic solutions. Sensors are at the heart of our products: they enable accurate measurement, informed decision-making, and reliable automation in areas such as milking, feeding, and cow monitoring.

In this role, you contribute across the full sensor development lifecycle, from defining requirements and exploring concepts to testing solutions and supporting production. You work closely with colleagues from mechanical, electrical, software, and AI disciplines to ensure that sensor technologies are well-integrated, robust, and future-proof.

Your work has a direct impact on animal welfare, farm efficiency, and sustainability. By improving how data is captured and interpreted, you help create solutions that support healthier cows, reduce waste, and enable farmers to work more effectively.

Your main responsibilities:

  • Developing sensor concepts in line with Lely’s product and technology roadmaps.
  • Translating measurement needs into clear, well-founded technical requirements.
  • Reviewing mechanical and electrical designs to ensure optimal sensor performance and integration.
  • Designing and executing experiments to validate sensor functionality, using a structured and learning-oriented approach.
  • Supporting verification and validation activities to ensure sensor systems meet quality and industry standards.
  • Collaborating closely with hardware testers, animal and farming experts, and data & AI specialists to continuously improve sensor applications.

Wat is jouw ervaring?

You are motivated by solving complex technical challenges and enjoy working in multidisciplinary environments where knowledge is shared and ideas are explored together. You combine analytical thinking with a hands-on mindset and value clarity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

You bring:

  • A completed Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline, such as Electronics, Mechatronics, or Physics.
  • At least 5 years of experience in sensor system development, integration, or testing.
  • Broad knowledge of sensor technologies, measurement principles, and data acquisition methods.
  • Experience in setting up experiments and analyzing measurement data to validate performance and reliability.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a structured approach to development and testing.
  • The ability to document insights clearly and communicate findings to a diverse group of stakeholders.

Wat bieden wij jou?

Working at Lely means contributing to sustainable progress within one of the most innovative organizations in the Netherlands. You help make the agricultural sector more futureproof, and we ensure you have the space, resources, and support to do so.

  • An international work environment that values collaboration, initiative, and diverse perspectives.
  • A culture that encourages learning, experimentation, and ownership of ideas.
  • Excellent employment conditions, including up to 8 weeks of vacation per year and a strong pension scheme.
  • A salary range of €5,000 – €7,100 gross per month, with clear opportunities for growth within the scale.
  • Full ownership of your own development, with access to a wide range of courses through the Lely Academy.
  • Daily access to outstanding sports facilities at the Lely Campus: an indoor gym, outdoor padel courts, basketball and volleyball courts, table tennis, and table football. You can join Hyrox workouts or sign up for personal training and challenge your colleagues during an active break.
  • Fresh coffee and tea from our own barista (with milk from our own farm) and a healthy, affordable company restaurant.

Work-life balance

  • A healthy work-life balance thanks to our hybrid working policy: you work at least three days a week on Campus, with flexible hours and plenty of opportunity to spend additional time onsite (between 06:00 and 20:00).
  • A free shuttle bus that takes you to and from the metro station in Maassluis, ensuring your workday starts and ends smoothly.
  • And of course: we love to celebrate! Whether it’s an anniversary or the annual Christmas party. At Lely, we know how to do it.

Over Lely

At Lely, we believe in achieving a sustainable, profitable and agreeable future for dairy farmers by combining robotisation, engineering and farming expertise.

With a team of more than 2,800 professional specialists, we work constantly to bring about revolutionary solutions for the agro industry. We are based at our Maassluis Campus, a building which features the highest sustainability performance possible, not just in the Netherlands, but on a global scale. Our overall objective: making dairy farming interesting, also for the coming generations.
