About this internship

When creating models of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs), it is very important to validate whether the model correctly captures the system. At TNO, we have developed a tool called LSAT to model FMSs, which is used on a regular basis by various companies. Currently, a Gantt chart can be used for model validation, showing the actions and movements performed by the resources over time. While being comprehensive, showing the full schedule, the Gantt chart also quickly becomes hard to read for larger models. This makes it time-consuming to validate whether production schedule is as intended. Graphical simulation is a complementary approach that can aid in model validation. The simulation visualizes the modeled system behavior, showing how resources (e.g., robots, processing stations) interact and how products flow through the system.

What will be your role?

In this assignment, you will design and prototype an approach to generate a graphical simulation directly from an LSAT model. The approach should be evaluated on ease of use, scalability and clarity using a set of available models. Ideally, we would like to link the simulation to the Gantt chart already being generated, such that a vertical line indicates where the simulation is in the schedule. Also, we would like to explore ways to make the simulation interactive. For example, pausing the simulation, or moving back or forward in the schedule.

What we expect from you

We are looking for a student with programming experience, preferably also on visualization, that is required to create the graphical simulation environment. You are enthusiastic about developing visualizations that help end users obtain insights. You are a good communicator, and have some affinity with domain-specific modeling.

What you'll get in return

You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Furthermore, we provide:

  • A highly professional, innovative internship environment, within a team of top experts.
  • A suitable internship allowance (615 euro for wo-, hbo- and mbo-students, for a full-time internship).
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • A free membership of Jong TNO, where you can meet other TNO professionals and join several activities, such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.

TNO as an employer
