Leave your mark on our time? Join TNO as a Scientist Computer Vision in The Hague!

About this position

Are you fascinated by AI that can recognize behavior and objects using camera systems? Do you want to contribute to the development of groundbreaking computer vision applications for a safer world? Then we are looking for you! As a Scientist Computer Vision, you will work within TNO’s Defense and Security unit and the Intelligent Imaging expertise group. The Intelligent Imaging group is a passionate, creative, and committed team of professionals (50 people) specializing in developing cutting-edge computer vision applications. Our team members have diverse backgrounds, ranging from physics to artificial intelligence. Intelligent Imaging is a young and growing department that has built extensive expertise in AI and deep learning over the past years. In small and large projects, you will collaborate with colleagues from other expertise groups, both within and outside the defense domain. We provide a thorough onboarding program and strive to match your talents with the best opportunities within the group.

What will be your role?

You will contribute to a variety of projects, often carried out in teams. Together, you will conduct research and develop new knowledge and technology. Additionally, you will work on projects where our expertise is directly applied for clients in business, industry, and government. At TNO, we work in close-knit teams of professionals in an open and informal culture across numerous domains for a safer world.

Here are some examples of projects you might work on:

  • Obtaining a strong information position is time-consuming and often dangerous for Defense. That’s why TNO collaborates with the Dutch Ministry of Defense and the international defense industry on unmanned, robotic, and decision-support systems. Our image analysis systems perform at least as well—and often better—than humans by leveraging advances in deep learning, AI, and autonomy. Examples include detecting roadside bombs using algorithms embedded in robotic systems or conducting surveillance operations to protect critical areas with algorithms onboard (un)manned aircraft;
  • In the security domain, we search for the needle in the haystack by analyzing large volumes of data. Our software supports the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) by automatically assessing the authenticity of source documents, such as birth certificates or marriage certificates;
  • There is an increasing need to perform complex tasks remotely, such as delivering remote healthcare or carrying out repairs in hazardous locations like oil platforms or disaster zones. Robots are increasingly used for these tasks. While robots can do a lot on their own, human expertise remains essential because these tasks are highly complex. At TNO, we develop solutions that allow an expert to log into a robot and perform tasks together remotely. At Intelligent Imaging, we focus on automatic environmental mapping, scene recognition, object grasping or avoidance, and efficient handling of sensor data.

What we expect from you

Your strong communication skills enable you to express yourself clearly to colleagues and clients. You are customer-oriented and decisive, working collaboratively toward results that are practical and applicable for our clients. You are pragmatic and eager to develop further as a researcher. We also value affinity with both the defense and security domains.

What you bring:

  • A completed academic degree in computer science, physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, medical imaging, or artificial intelligence (MSc or PhD);
  • Experience in research on computer vision and deep learning is essential (internship or thesis experience counts). Preferably complemented by experience in algorithm development;
  • Experience using Python, Matlab, and/or C++, or the ability to quickly learn new programming languages;
  • Good command of both English and Dutch (minimum B2 level).

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3,500 and € 4,300 (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert?

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 of 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • A good pension scheme.

TNO as an employer

At TNO, we innovate for a healthier, safer and more sustainable life. And for a strong economy. There is all the space and support for your talent and ambition. You work with people who will challenge you: who inspire you and want to learn from you. Our state-of-the-art facilities are there to realize your vision. What you do at TNO matters: impact makes the difference. Because with every innovation you contribute to tomorrow’s world.

As you will be working for clients in the domain of defence and security, a Certificate of No Objection issued by AIVD (the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service) is mandatory. This means you will have to undergo a security screening.

‘Safety is not something that can be taken for granted. That's why the work you do here, in any position, is meaningful and has an impact on society." For that exact reason, Jane Duinisveld works as a Corporate Recruiter at the TNO unit Defence, Safety and Security and hopes to find colleagues who are just as driven to contribute to peace and security.’ Jane Duinisveld Corporate Recruiter

Innovation with purpose: that is what TNO stands for. We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application. TNO connects people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the competitive strength of industry and the well-being of society in a sustainable way.
