Internship opportunity in Machine Learning for Plastic Recycling at TNO Circular Plastics

About this position

The automotive industry generates significant amounts of plastic waste, much of which is challenging to recycle efficiently due to the diversity of materials and the presence of hard-to-identify plastics. This internship at TNO Circular Plastics focuses on developing advanced machine learning methods, combined with spectroscopy, to improve the sorting and recycling of automotive plastics. By working on this project, you will contribute directly to innovative solutions that transform complex plastic waste streams into valuable resources, supporting the transition to a more sustainable and circular economy.

What will be your role?

This internship project focuses on developing a machine learning tool, to sort plastic waste from automotive industry per material type and quality based on spectroscopy measurements. A key objective is to accurately identify black plastics, which are notoriously challenging to detect using conventional methods due to their unique optical properties.
You will work in a passionate team of scientists, utilizing your skills in programming and computer sciences. The aim of this internship is to provide students with a taste of research outside academia.

What we expect from you

Candidates should be currently pursuing a degree in data science, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, with experience in data analysis and machine learning, is crucial. Familiarity with GIT is crucial. Knowledge in materials and polymer is a plus. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail, are important.

What you'll get in return

  • A highly professional, innovative internship environment, within a team of top experts.
  • A suitable internship allowance (615 euro for wo-, hbo- and mbo-students, for a full-time internship).
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • A free membership of Jong TNO, where you can meet other TNO professionals and join several activities, such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.
