The role

As an HVAC Integration Engineer, you will work on a wide range of tasks in the field of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, cooling, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems on board complex (naval) vessels. You are involved throughout the entire process, from the initial proposal to the final delivery of the ship. During project execution, you collaborate in a team with multiple engineers from various disciplines to achieve the required engineering outcomes. You apply both technical and practical knowledge to the design, ensuring that HVAC-R systems are integrated into the overall ship design compliant with contract. A core part of your responsibility is to guarantee the smooth integration of these systems across all departments, facilitating effective collaboration and seamless project progress.

As an HVAC Integration Engineer, you make an active contribution to the engineering process by reviewing and optimizing essential deliverables such as preliminary calculations, schematic drawings, specification documents, reviewing supplier documentation, functional descriptions, and test and validation plans. To achieve this, you are in direct daily communication with the customer and subcontractor. In this way, you directly contribute to the success of our projects and the innovative strength of Damen Naval.

Key accountabilities

  • Writing technical specifications for suppliers and sub-contractors based upon customer and design requirements.
  • Performing technical evaluations of quotations from sub-contractors in close cooperation with the purchasing department.
  • Checking compliance with all applicable requirements imposed by the customer and statutory bodies.
  • Engaging in technical discussions to achieve comparable levels of compliance for competing suppliers of the same product/system, providing a good starting point for commercial negotiation.
  • Acting as the dedicated point of contact for selected subcontractors and managing aspects like scope of work, delivery demarcation, progress reporting, and quality of deliveries during the engineering phase.
  • Responsible for integration of delivered components/systems into ship design in close cooperation with internal departments, sub-contractors, statutory bodies, and the owner.
  • Reviewing supplier engineering information/documentation (e.g., mechanical drawings, schematics, calculations, electrical diagrams, etc.).
  • Providing input and updates for the engineering database (e.g., purchase orders, parts, meta-data, documentation).
  • Performing required technical calculations to validate the sub-contractor’s design.
  • Composing technical/functional specification documents (e.g., SDS).
  • Supervising all contractual obligations of the sub-contractor(s) and keeping track of deviations to the contract.
  • Supervising the outsourcing of the HVAC detailed engineering work (3D environment) and verifying the output.
  • Verifying technical performance of products and systems (e.g., inspection of equipment at supplier premises, FATs).
  • Offering technical support for commissioning and testing activities.
  • Ensuring good working relationships with technical representatives of suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Participating in design checks, reviews, and risk analysis to guarantee the required quality.

Skills & experience

  • Professional education at Bachelor or Master level, preferably in the field of HVAC engineering or mechanical engineering, with proven work skills based on experience.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience.
  • Knowledge of HVAC-R systems in a marine or offshore environment.
  • Knowledge of electrical and automation in a marine or offshore environment.
  • Quality, planning, and budget awareness.
  • Able to work with and manage multiple third-party vendors and subcontractors.
  • Experience with statutory bodies is a pre.
  • Proficiency in Dutch and English, both written and verbal.
