Help build tomorrow’s electricity grid with TenneT

At TenneT, we work every day on tomorrow’s electricity grid. Our goal? A reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy system. As a Sub Project Lead Commissioning HVDC Primary Systems in the Engineering Services team, you play a key role in realizing our 2GW programme — connecting offshore wind energy to the Dutch electricity grid. Ready to make an impact?

Your Role

As a Sub Project Lead Commissioning HVDC Primary Systems, you are responsible for managing and overseeing site activities related to primary installations during the construction and commissioning phase of the 2GW Land Station in Borssele. You will coordinate with multidisciplinary teams—including engineering, contractors, and commissioning teams—to ensure all technical systems meet contractual, quality, and safety standards, and to drive smooth project execution. You will also manage schedules, resolve technical issues during commissioning, and ensure successful project delivery.

In addition, you are responsible for:

  • Commissioning leadership – Oversee and supervise the commissioning of HVDC primary systems, including transformers, converter reactors, harmonic filters, GIS, AIS, converter valves, instrument transformers, bushings, and terminations, ensuring compliance with project specifications and safety standards.
  • Technical oversight – Participate in design reviews, witness factory acceptance tests (FATs), monitor compliance during manufacturing and installation, and provide technical guidance and support to team members and stakeholders.
  • Quality and progress control – Review technical documentation, monitor site activities, develop and maintain commissioning schedules, progress reports, and documentation, and ensure testing procedures and records (ITPs/ITRs) meet TenneT standards.
  • Safety and compliance – Safeguard SHE (Safety, Health, Environment) compliance and ensure robust contractor performance on-site, ensuring all commissioning activities are performed in accordance with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Reporting and handover – Prepare progress reports, technical evaluations, and lessons learned, support the handover of commissioned systems, and escalate technical issues as necessary.

You will work closely with the Sub Project Lead Primary from the core HVDC team and report hierarchically to the Lead Integration and Commissioning within the Engineering & Services department. Functionally, you report to the Sub Project Lead HVDC Land Stations and the Commissioning Manager.

This role is based in Arnhem, with frequent presence required at the Borssele Land Station during the commissioning phase.

Your Profile & Background

At TenneT, we are looking for professionals who help shape the future of our electricity grid. We expect you to bring the right experience and skills to make a valuable contribution to our team and mission.

What do you bring?

  • Technical expertise: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or comparable), or equivalent experience, with advanced experience in commissioning HVDC or high-voltage installations.
  • Practical leadership: Proven experience in leading and supervising commissioning activities, with strong coordination, project management, and communication skills to guide on-site activities and technical discussions.
  • Analytical mindset: Structured, detail-oriented, and able to translate complex technical issues into clear actions, with excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Collaboration and initiative: Independent, proactive, and confident in working across disciplines and stakeholder groups.

Additional requirements:

  • Fluent in Dutch and English, both written and spoken.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to travel between Arnhem and Borssele and flexibility to be on-site during critical phases.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Our Offer

TenneT gives you the opportunity to contribute to a sustainable energy future. Together with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders, you work on innovative solutions that enable the energy transition. You’ll have room to develop your talents in an environment where your growth is a priority.

  • A permanent contract with a two-month probation period based on 40 hours per week or a year contract with the intention to be determined after 1 or 2 years.
  • Market-conform salary in scale 8: €4151 to €8197 per month, excluding 8% holiday pay and a 6% year-end bonus, with 70% pension contribution.
