Internship Opportunity in the Quality Department: Galileo Ground Segment and Quality Management System

Our team and mission

The Product Assurance & Safety (PA&S) Offices at ESA coordinate and supervise PA&S activities for the respective programmes and projects in the relevant application directorate, representing the directorate in all corporate activities in the PA&S domain, including Quality Management. The Heads of the PA&S Office report functionally to the respective director of the relevant programme directorate and are responsible for the assurance of all space-relevant aspects within the associated directorates. They also support the Independent Safety Office regarding Space Debris Mitigation and Safety activities. Heads of PA&S Offices act as QMS Managers of the relevant application directorate, ensuring maintenance and certification of the QMS and reporting directly to the relevant director on urgent matters.

Galileo is Europe’s own global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control. Galileo is interoperable with GPS and Glonass, the US and Russian global satellite navigation systems. By offering dual frequencies as standard, Galileo can deliver real-time positioning accuracy down to the metre range.

Topic of the internship: Digital transformation of processes in Galileo Ground Segment and Galileo Quality Management System

This internship offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in agile task management and information exchange within a dynamic, multi-faceted system. You will focus on adapting JIRA, a robust task management tool, to optimise task management, enhance team collaboration, and streamline communication across various projects and teams. A key aspect of the role involves leveraging advanced scheduling and resource management functionalities through tools such as BigPicture.

Activities

  • Analyse existing processes in the Ground Segment, Galileo Quality Management System, and potentially other segments with users to identify needs, streamline them, and contextualize them with other processes, linking as necessary.
  • Design a project based on JIRA, and possibly other tools (Teams, Microsoft Office 365), to meet identified needs.
  • Develop workflows to monitor key project stages, including design, issue tracking, deployment, testing, and validation.
  • Set up automated reporting mechanisms to provide stakeholders with real-time updates on project progress and identify potential task or scheduling conflicts.

This internship provides hands-on experience in optimizing essential tools for real-world applications. You will gain valuable skills in JIRA customization, project management methodologies, and effective communication strategies. The role will also help you develop problem-solving and analytical abilities as you navigate the challenges of managing a multi-project, multi-team environment. This position is ideal for candidates looking to apply theoretical knowledge to practical, agile development environments and information systems.

Education

  • You must be a university student, preferably at master’s level.
  • You must be able to prove that you will be enrolled at your university for the entire duration of the internship.

Additional requirements

  • The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another ESA Member State language is an asset.
  • During the interview, your motivation for applying to this role will be explored.
  • Knowledge and background in IA is required.
  • Some knowledge of the following topics would be an asset: System Engineering; Product Assurance.
