Help Improve Steel Production with Smart Technology at Tata Steel R&D

Do you want to help improve how steel is made by using smart technology? Join our R&D team and help us detect defects on steel coils using computer vision and machine learning!

At Tata Steel R&D, we work on practical solutions with real industrial impact. In this internship, you’ll help improve our existing image-based system that automatically detects surface defects on hot-rolled steel coil tails – a system that is already running in production today.

What will you do?

• You’ll enhance the image pre-processing pipeline to improve spatial targeting and accurate cropping of defects.
• You’ll improve the extraction of meaningful defect features to boost the performance of the current detection pipeline.
• You’ll explore alternative object detection methods to complement the existing system and evaluate the performance improvements using real production data.
• You'll develop your technical skills. Use Python and MATLAB with frameworks like OpenCV, TensorFlow, and YOLO to solve complex image processing challenges.
• You'll have the opportunity to discover our organization. In addition to working on your project, you’ll get the chance to see more of the company!

During your internship, you'll gain hands-on experience with real production data and machine learning systems. Whether you want to pursue a career in R&D or explore new areas within your field, we offer the possibilities. This internship might be more suitable for students seeking practical experience outside of their thesis work, as it involves very hands-on work with clearly defined goals and limited literature research.

• Minimaal 18 jaar oud / At least 18 years old.
• Nieuwsgierige instelling / A curious mindset.
• Flexibiliteit / Flexibility.
• Are a hbo/wo student in a relevant field such as computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, or technical computer science (the internship needs to be part of a study program).
• Have experience with Python or MATLAB and familiarity with libraries like OpenCV, TensorFlow, or YOLO.
• Have knowledge of image processing, computer vision, object detection, or machine learning principles.
• Have the ability to work structured and independently on complex technical challenges.
• Have strong English communication skills for international collaboration.
