Data driving load collective innovation within the product development department

Graduation Project: Load Collectives for Future Trucks

The trend toward smarter and more efficient truck designs is strongly influenced by the integration of data-driven approaches. Load collectives, which represent the statistical distribution of loads experienced by truck components during real-world operation, are essential for designing more robust and lightweight drivelines.

In this graduation project, you will work on developing and refining load collectives for future truck applications. This involves collecting, analyzing, and interpreting operational data from various sources such as sensors, test drives, and fleet monitoring systems. By leveraging this data, the goal is to create accurate load profiles that reflect real-world usage conditions.

These load collectives will be used to improve component durability analysis, optimize weight, and enhance overall driveline performance. Your work will significantly contribute to more reliable and cost-effective driveline designs that meet the demands of future truck applications.

As part of this internship, you will be expected to deliver:

  • A detailed workflow describing the steps and methods used in data collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Identification of anomalies in the data and proposed methods to handle or exclude them.
  • Selection and justification of suitable filtering methods to extract representative load data reflecting typical damage.
  • Creation of load collective profiles specifically tailored to individual driveline components.
  • Analysis and insights on how the developed load collectives influence durability assessments.
  • Documentation of the methodology, data analysis, results, and recommendations.
  • A final presentation summarizing the project outcome and key findings.

Your profile

We are looking for Bachelor or Master students in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Data Science, or a related field, who have a strong interest in data analysis, vehicle dynamics, and product development.

About the team

The product development driveline team is responsible for driveline components from engine interface to the wheels, including gearbox, driveshaft, front and rear axles. The team consists of 15-20 engineers who develop and engineer driveline components. They collaborate closely with other stakeholders in multidisciplinary SE-teams to achieve optimal component designs.

What we offer

  • A view behind the scenes at a large international corporation; you will get a lot of freedom and responsibility.
  • We are open to your initiatives and depending on the assignment you see your results back in the workplace.
  • An experienced coach and supervisor who can teach you a lot and is willing to help you with your assignment.
  • After your graduation, you will have the opportunity to start your career at DAF.
  • An internship wage of €375 (Bachelor) or €450 (Master) per month on a full-time basis.
  • A travel allowance, if you don’t have a student travel product (provided by the Dutch government).
  • A housing allowance, if you temporarily rent a room near DAF.
