Do you want to actively participate in research projects in the field of the microbiome and human health? Do you have a passion for microbial physiological and metabolic processes in the human body? Can you see yourself in this role? Become a Scientist Bi

About this position

The complex microbial ecosystem of our microbiome plays a crucial role in our health. Although metagenome sequencing has provided detailed information about the composition of the microbiome, fundamental questions remain about the interactions between these microorganisms and our immune system, metabolism, and disease processes. These fascinating research areas offer innovation opportunities for the development of new therapeutic approaches, including pre- and probiotics and personalised treatment methods, which can have a positive impact on human health.

What will be your role?

As a Scientist Bioinformatics, you will work within the Health & Work unit, in the Microbiology & Systems Biology (MSB) Research Group. With your expertise in bioinformatics and a passion for microbiology, you will contribute to analyses and the role of the microbiome in disease and health.

You will work together with colleagues and external partners outside TNO in project teams on various research questions. In addition to conducting analyses, you will contribute to project proposals, quotations, and reports. In this way, you contribute to the visibility of our research and the success of innovation and collaboration projects for clients and partners.

What we expect from you

You are driven and an expert in bioinformatics. You have an interest in human health and want to contribute to better health for everyone. You feel at home in multidisciplinary teams where you collaborate with microbiologists, cell biologists, physiologists, and clinical experts. You are proactive and curious by nature. Furthermore, you can explain your research to a diverse audience.

What else do you bring?

  • You have 1-3 years of experience in bioinformatics analyses, preferably in the field of the human microbiome.
  • Experience with the development of bioinformatics pipelines, interactive data visualisation, and web applications (R Shiny).
  • Excellent command of Python or R.
  • Experience with Linux, bash, and high-performance computing.
  • You have an M.Sc. in Bioinformatics or a relevant field.
  • You are entrepreneurial, proactive, creative, and able to work well in a team.
  • You have a good command of both Dutch and English.
