Lightspeed is seeking a talented and experienced Staff Software Developer to join our growing Payments team. In Payments, you’ll be on the frontline of adding real-world value to our products, igniting our merchants’ businesses, and driving Lightspeed’s future success.

As a Staff Software Developer, you will provide technical leadership to your team and the overall Services organization. With strong technical expertise in building scalable and resilient systems, and a passion for mentoring others, you will play an active role in leading your team to successfully deliver key initiatives. You will also help evolve team processes across all facets of development—from idea to delivery, production operations, and more. Most importantly, you’ll work alongside a team of experts within a growing department, providing foundational services to various products at Lightspeed that are critical to our success.

What you'll be responsible for

• Providing technical leadership within your team and contributing to the timely delivery of key initiatives on the roadmap, with minimal supervision
• Collaborating with Product, Design, Operations, and other teams to align relevant stakeholders
• Decomposing high-level requirements into development tasks and delegating work items
• Evolving the technical architecture for the systems your team owns
• Partnering with other technical leaders across the organization to evolve the overall technical ecosystem
• Demonstrating a strong commitment to engineering excellence, including code quality, observability, and production operations
• Initiating and contributing to the continuous improvement of our software delivery processes and practices
• Mentoring team members and identifying and encouraging areas of growth and career development
• Participating in the recruitment of top talent for your team and the organization

What you’ll be bringing to the team

• Expertise in engineering and computer science fundamentals
• Strong opinions and experience in developing and maintaining distributed systems at scale
• Proficiency in Java 8 or higher
• Experience with other mainstream programming languages (such as TypeScript, NodeJS, etc.)
• Experience working with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL)
• Experience developing scalable, reliable applications on the cloud (we use AWS/GCP)
• Proven experience leading multi-quarter, cross-team initiatives and feature work from design to production deployment
• A strong sense of ownership, willingness to take informed risks, and a commitment to a blame-free culture
• Curiosity and a deep desire for continuous learning
