About this position
Microplastics are increasingly recognized as environmental contaminants with potential health risks. Despite growing concern, the mechanisms by which microplastic particles affect human health remain unclear. One possible pathway is the induction of oxidative stress through increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
In this internship, you will investigate whether exposure to microplastic particles leads to oxidative stress in cell models by measuring ROS generation.
In this internship, you will gain hands-on experience with cell culturing, microplastic particle handling, and in vitro toxicity testing. Next to common cytotoxicity assays, flow cytometry (FACS) will be used as a key method to quantify ROS levels and assess cellular responses. You’ll process and analyze experimental data, discuss findings in lab meetings, and present the results in reports.
You will be part of the RAPID (Risk Analysis of Product in Development) team located in Utrecht and the Human Cell Biology (HCB) research group located in Leiden. Importantly, the experimental work will be performed in TNO's research facilities in Leiden.
What we expect from you
We are looking for a motivated master's student in a relevant field (such as toxicology, biomedical sciences, or molecular biology) with hands-on experience in in vitro cultures (required) and preferably FACS. A background or strong interest in toxicology or particle research is appreciated. The ideal candidate can work independently, is persistent, eager to learn and to overcome challenges, communicates well, and enjoys teamwork.
What you'll get in return
